My mom and dad are going to Singapore in about 6 weeks, and my dad asked me if he should get something for my PC....I can think of a few things, for instance a GTX which is ~$560 here in the UK (pounds converted to dollars for you guys), because of terrible tax on hardware etc. (horrible prices here)

So I was kinda wondering if it would be a good idea to buy a GTX there...would you get in troubles with customs? I bet it's really really cheap there...so what should I do? :)

Thanks!

Problem is that customs will more than likely take you behind the shed on this one. Your best bet is to look into how much paying the duties will be rather than trying to smuggle it into the country. After all, you're screwed if you're caught.

bringing things in as gifts can sometimes get past duties.

Each countrys borders has to be restricted as long as the valuta and prizes isn't the same. Your country would go brok, if it were allowed to take anything with you from the cheapest country, course no one would buy in your own country. There is a reason why duty exist, you have to balance things.

Just unpack it and don't bring it in retail box. And in case they ask just say it is a small gift, some video card. I doubt they will check what type of video it is. And even if you have to pay tax in the worst case scenario it would still be cheaper than in UK.

lose the receipt and remove the packaging and you'll be safe.

I have bought PC components for myself several times in Japan and US and I brought them in Europe (UK/Italy/Germany). I never had a problem in any airport. If the products are for personal use, no reselling purposes, you are allowed to carry them. Every customs official should know that, otherwise you should explain it to him. ;)

You can check out www.vr-zone.com , post for prices there, is a Singapore based hardware site.

I've heard the best place for buying hardware is Sim Lim Square, and Inno3D video cards are pretty cheap.

About customs, in my last trip to SFO (for Nvidia's 7800GTX launch), I brought a DLink switch, 4gigs of RAM, a DFI LanParty, 2x7800GTX, a power supply and had no problems. :)

Offtopic:
Tim you say UK prices are horrible. Well take a look at this:
7800GTX - $655
7800GT - $510
OCZ 2x1024 MB DDR400@2-3-2-5 Platinum - $535

No way I`m gonna buy something here in Latvia
It`s great that I can deal with ppl here at XS for hardware - and I never pay any customs when some new part arrives. I have my secret moves ;)
