all right, first for the rig, just cause the sig is a bit out of date now
Opteron 144, s939
ocz powerstream420
gf4mx - pci
assorted hard drives and fans
2x512mb ballistix
1x1024mb crucial value
1x128mb crucial value
i just got a dfi nf4 ultra-d. it's a R.AB0 board. i've heard bad things about these.. but that's aside the point for now. it came with bios 3-10. after i started having issues, i flashed it to 6-23. no change in behavior between the two bioses
basically.. the computer won't boot with one stick or mismatched dimms in. when i try to run the 2x512mb ballistix, i'll always get memtest errors in one spot. try switching the slots (1+3 is better than 2+4), and the error spot changes. this makes me think something is wrong with the ballistix, but it worked just fine on my dfi nf3-250gb this morning.
this is ok.. as there is always a chance that i hurt one of the sticks, but there is no logical reason why the mobo hangs with 3 led's lit, meaning it's having problems detecting the ram with one stick, or a mismatched pair, in the slots. i tried almost every possible config between the above 4 sticks, but nothing will even boot unless it's the 2x512mb of ballistix in either slots 1+3 or 2+4
i also posted this at dfi-street.. but i want some second opinions :D

How do you tell what revision it is please?

on the sticker on the 2nd pci-e 16x slot
and i got it working. dump issue on my part for windows not booting, had to reinstall windows. i was expecting a bsod telling me my hardware changed though :stick:
it also turns out that i killed one of my sticks of ballistix. i tested it in my dfi nf3-250gb and consistantly got errors in the same place. now the only hurdle left to tackle is booting with one stick :D
By the way, how is the opteron 144?

ozziiiiiiiiiii
wht the hell you doin man :), r you a sadomachist?? We are waiting for results of 939 Opteron in other thread!!! Sorry to hear you had teathing problems unrelated to the CPU, phew, you had me worried their, LOL
When we gonna find out some overclcokabilty of the chip? With some screenies, please dont make us suffer any more.
:woot:
-EDIT-
Check to see if you havnt accidently knocked a small resistor off, or slightly moved one, very easily done and could be the cause of your errors.Very easy to fix, tht is if you can find the part!!! Only need a touch of solder :)

of which? the IHS is still on the cpu :toast:
and it's clocking quite well, i have to do some tweaking because there's no reason for 1.5v to top out at the same place as 1.55v.. though with the stock heatsink i'm hitting >60c load :(

Sorry should have been more specific,
I mean check the Ballistix for a knocked off resistor.
60C under load, thts quite high, even under the stock heatsink, but we must remember these ARE 1mb chips. And we KNOW tht many times the IHS does not make correct contact with the core
:stick: AMD, this shouldnt happen
Going to bed now (2:40 here in Cyprus), will be waking up tomorrow and shooting straight onto the computer to see your results, I hope I wont be dissapointed.
PS, I can see you removing the IHS, LOL

If I understand your Qs correctly...
Board will only boot with a single stick if it is in one of the two slots *furthest* from the CPU.
You can't have 3 DIMMs in DC mode... must be added in pairs (2 or 4).... and each stick of a pair must be same size ;)
Peace :toast:

ozzi, what kind of heatsink came w/ it? heatpipes?

vulgar, normal stock heatsink, no heatpipes :(

yup, you do understand. this is what steveOCZ told me too, thanks!
though i still need to verify that it works ;)

60c is with 1.55v. at stock voltage (1.4v), load barely breaks 40c. i think the core is at fault
also.. i looked at the ballistix stick pretty throroughly, didn't see anything out of place

good, glad, that means w/ stock heatsink w/o heatpipes you ran stock speeds w/ 1.025v, just sounds better than doing that w/ water :D
