Regarding the Riva tunner there is a option to disable drive check for overclock ....don't remember exacly where :D .
What PSU are you using ? Try to figure out what is causing artifacts first , memory or GPU

yah i get stuck aroudn there on my EVGA GTX, im pretty sure its voltage related, and softmods dont seem to work, im running a 1.5v modded bios by dynasty over at EOCF and it helped a little but not much.
Only thing u can really do is a vmod

you can only overclock the core to certain points, i think its around steps of 30mhz. aside from that, the only prog i have found that i can use to overclock my gts is "systool" under nvidia overclocking. there is no test, so be careful no to clock too high, or you will burn. i leave my gt cores at default, which is 445 on my cards, but something in the drivers bumps this up to 495 when i bench or run 3d apps. also, remember, there are 2 core clocks, one traditional, the other for shaders. nvidia removed core overclocking from the users, pretty much. i guess they were tired of selling gt's and people overclocking them to ultra speed and enabling pipelines.this is why the "pipes are hard disabled" or thats what the recent legend is. they do have to show a profit here and there, i guess.
good luck

disable the internal clock test on rivatuner. easy as that. just goto power user tab→ NVIDIA\Overclocking→ put a 1 in DisableInternalClockTest.
My BFG 7800gtx OC will only do 495 or so on the core too. 32c idle 56c load. Bull:banana::banana::banana::banana: I tell you. My evga does 525 core, but only 1330 mem while the BFG does 1425 mem
