View Full Version : First R520 review

Normally we would’ve adhered to ATI’s NDA and published results the moment it expired. However this time around ATI decided to just not bother with us as they made it very clear that we did not make the cut, as we have written some articles about CrossFire, R520 and ATI’s financial situation that were not apparently not appreciated. Hence we’ve not been briefed by ATI, nor did we sign an NDA, or have been invited to the launch event, so basically they decided to cut us off.
very dissapointing

I urge you do not buy an r520! It costs more and its slower than a 7800gtx and in some cases, a 7800gt! Of course some people will not listen and go ahead anyway. Their loss! From the benchmarks, the 7800gtx beats the x1800xt in everything and ties in farcry. In doom3, even a 7800gt wins! The x850xt pe isnt a bad card and is much cheaper than x1800pro/xt. Nvidia clearly has the performance crown for high end with their 7800gtx at or near $500. ATI does win the midrange crown with their x800pro and x800xl at or near $200, although the slightly more expensive 6800gt isnt a bad choice if you must have ps3. ATI also has some good low end cards like the 9700pro for agp users while Nvidia's 6600gt has been very popular.
If you want to buy a high end card, the 7800gtx is the way to go! For midrange, id suggest an x800pro, x800xl or 6800gt and maybe x1600xt(yet to be seen) for low end a 6600gt, x800gt(if prices come down) or 9700pro(for agp)

Wasn't it already said that the review was a load of BS because they didn't actually do the benchmark themselves? They "sent in specifications" to the boardmaker and got back results.

I'm not sure what is going on here, so I'll mind my own business....
But as to the benchmarks,...if they are not BS, I thought they looked pretty good. Only lost to GTX in SLi and of course lost in Doom III but that is to be expected of ATI cards in Open GL.

Right. Actually I think it will come down to weather or not the new 90nm cores will run well under xtreme cooling. If they do the 7800GTX will have a problem :bananal:, LOD or not.
Personally I think they will overclock like mad.

haha i had this huge post lined up in the other thread and when i clicked submit the thread was crashed lol too bad im not gonna write it again. basically i was saying that those results seemed real realistic and pretty competitive. in a month or a few hehe dep on availability the price will drop and they will be competitive with the gtx in all fields so that will be good. crossfire is completly usless besides benching if you really are limited to 1600x1200 @ 60hz as thats just retarted. one single gtx can play any game 1600x1200 with 4xaa over 60 fps so what would the point of crossfire be then?? but hopefully ati engeneers can get around it then it will be usefull tech.

I also thought it strange the other threads got nuked. I guess r520 being too little, too late has sparked off alot of anger. I am disapointed too but im keeping it civil. Now people are defending ati and saying this benchmark is fake. fake or not, dont expect 16 pipes to beat 24 pipes, sorry.

Ati seem to be suggesting those results are not correct, but none of us know so it's still a case of waiting to see what happens in early October.

Seriously, ATI had originally planned for a 32-pipe card. Now, if these benchies would be fake and the 16-pipe card would do even better, what wouldn't be the performance of the original? I think it's very unrealistic to expect more, many of you very same people denying these benchies, when we first saw GTX benchies weren't you saying they're fake and bogus too? Well, they were not. Even this, considering half the pipes, is very impressive, imho.
And as said in the article, performance might change both ways with different clocks, "improved" drivers a la nvidi. Moreover, the article said nada about overclockability (so there's hope for those strong in faith). This is more the performance of the R520 core @ 600/1400 w/ 512MB GDDR3, not really the performance X1800XT, please keep this in mind.

Or in high-res the ATi won once over a single GTX. So I tend to think ATi is the co. that won one bench... if true of course.

AndyLOL, just a thought. What if those results are in fact wrong and the actual ones are LOWER?!
Wouldn't that be interesting?
Anyway, I'm thinking of picking up a GTO2 so I can compare R420 and R520 clock for clock (I'm VERY interested in this!), with a downclock on the R520.

I don't think 1GHz will do it, it's bare minimum....
Linear math...
GTX:
430MHz -> 700MHz = +63%
X1800XT:
600MHz + 63% = 978MHz
and then they need to make up for not being faster in the first place.
But, on the other hand, Crossfire is said to be more efficient than SLI, and ATI usually have an edge in 3DMark2001 for example.
My 2 cents.
biohead
09-17-2005, 02:35 PM
i agree with crotale. Crossfire isn't tested yet, and it's suppost to be more efficient than SLI in general. Lets hope so, im a fanboy :)

It's clearly flawed review. I wouldn't even call it a review as it's probably using a very early revision of the card with the most basic drivers designed to test other functions of the card OTHER than performance. (Dual-link DVI, h.264 hardware acceleration, and all the other non-performance related goodies)
Think about it this way, if R520s is slower than 7800GTX by the time it's shipped, ATI would of DROPPED the R520 products long time ago and shift right to R580. They clearly have not, so R520 WILL be as fast if not faster than 7800s.
And with those numbers, it wouldn't even be worth it show AIB partners from a business point of view, it's just retarded. "Hey you wanna buy this from us, it's crappier than competitor's product but at similar price level"
No that's just wrong, so these numbers are either MADE up, or just some non-official internal test with crippled drivers.
So personally, this article really does NOTHING imo, it doesn't give us any implication of how fast the cards are, and other new features on the card. I'm guessing it's just a PR move to get at ATI, so they actually SEND them a card and shut them up type of move.
Either way, we'll find out in about 2.5 weeks. I believe NDA is expires in first week of October.

so no matter what nvidia cant be ahead in performance. if the R520 had been quicker in the review more people would have been inclined to believe it. R520 being slower isnt what they want to hear.

I hate it when threads are closed due to complaints...
It has absolutely no purpose...issues remain unsolved and therefore grudges also remain way longer without ever getting the chance to be resolved ... Useless censorship that only brings more aggitition... We are not 12 anymore and have heard words like f-u-c-k before...., people here are perfectly able to speak up for themselves and resolve things without snitching to the teacher ...
Complaining does more damage to a forum then it does good imho ...
back on track ... Even iff the benches are "fake" which im not saying they aren't ... i personally dont expect way more from the R520 ... Fact remains that it has 8 pipes less, and has higher clocks to counter that.... It will probably perform like the 7800 GTX does, but not much more ....
I'm definately pro ATI, but the R520 will not be my new card,..especially since it again will be scarcely available like the X800XT's were when they first came out ...
Nvidia is a definate no-no due to my fanboy sickness...., so ill be waiting for the R580 cause i want many pipes for some reason ...
