Im connected directly to a router, with an ethernet cable. Im also using WindowsXP's Firewall. I think a port is being blocked by the router, because nothing changes when I turn off the firewall. Im using a Linksys Wireless-B. Do routers block ports? I don't know anything about this kind of stuff. :(

Can someone PLEASE help me, this is really important because I can't log onto something for college, that I have to take a test on. The test is due tomorrow, so Im pretty much panicing right now!

yes they do, you need to go into "advanced" then "forwarding" then open up "routing table" and type in port number to a specific IP address and apply. Whatever application you need to see thru the firewall will have instructions on UDP and TCP settings. click them both on if you are unsure.

or you can set that IP address to DMZ (demilitarized zone) meaning no firewall coverage and completely open to the net.

By default most ports are blocked, games and other apps that use non-standard ports.

I find a lot of consumer grade routers have glitches with port forwarding especially if you are doing multiple ranges for the same proggy etcc...The windows firewall is not that bad really.

But turn one of em off is my advice. That just leaves you with one point of management. I leave the hardware firewall on, turn windows firewall off for example. I know only one thing is screwing up then and I don't have windows burning more resources on protection that's not required.

Well I unblocked the port... and no go. Nothing! Then I started messing around with my password, by changing the spelling, using caps, etc and I got it to work!! ROFLOL

Wow... I must have spelled it another way without realizing.

Sorry... blonde moment. LOL

This link is about the best resource for router configuration I have come across. Even Linksys references it.
