View Full Version : I have just made the most xtreme move EVER!

Here are the facts:

A. I can't wait to try out SLI
B. I bought two Asus Extreme 7800GTX TOP cards for SLI
C. The coolers won't fit with the DFI NF4 SLI-DR MB
D. I love good hardware

What am I to do? I'll tell you. Get those really kick-a$$ Dell OEM Quadro coolers on the 7800GTX cards they sell. But there are none in the retail channels! So....yep, I bought a Dell XPS 600 with two 7800GTX cards. I willl soon have 4 7800GTX cards! LOL. I supposed I will have to turn a couple loose. But the bottom line is that I wanted those coolers so badly that I bought a whole new system to take them out of!

-FCG

P.S. Anyone want to buy a Dell XPS 600 with an Intel 820 and SLI-32x chipset? hehe.

That's nothing.

I'm so extreme, and rich, that I bought a Cray XE1 supercomputer because the X button had fallen off my keyboard and I could not get into this forum

My Cray X button is great though, 4 times faster than all the other keyboard buttons and if I need more speed later I can just massively increase the parallelism and superscale it by adding more X keys.

you could have gotten the 7800's you originally wanted and water cooled the whole rig for alot less.

Dell 600 $1878 (on sale right now, $2378 regularly)
SLI Asus 7800GTX's with Danger Den water cooling setup for whole rig ~$1568(using the best they have available)

Seriously though, this isn't extreme...it's childish. You did whatever you could to get what you wanted, rather than having some restraint and using just one card...or using your brain and just buying different single slot aftermarket coolers or gone truly extreme and installed dual waterblocks.

I am quite frankly shocked.
How can people behave like this? If he buys a Dell rig to rip the GFX-coolers from that is the DEFINITION of xtreme to me at least. This place has hit an all time low, what with the pestering from some dude who wants to buy the stuff for cheap? Come on! Whos says he has to lose money btw? Reselling the rig with the "crappy" clocking cards might fetch more than he bought it for.

It's the best 3M has to offer, quite good actually. I will be cutting squares for all GDDR3 chips as soon as it arrives. I hope to have it by Friday afternoon for some testing!

These are NOT 512MB cards. They are also missing the chip to the left of the core. I'm not sure what it is or what it does but it is definately not there. I also noticed this, very strange...these cores are being produced in more than one location and it appears by more than one manufacturer:

What do you need "thermal" "tape" for?

freecableguy
09-22-2005, 06:48 PM
There is an air gap between the GDDR3 chips and the heatsink. I purchased a sheet of 3M thermal interface padding 1.0mm thick to cut pieces from for use in the installation of the HSF.

iddqd
09-22-2005, 07:11 PM
Those gddr3 chips don't need a heatsink. You're better off without thermal tape, though... it's full of air pores, which acts as insulation, helping keep the heat in the chips.

freecableguy
09-22-2005, 07:14 PM
This thermal tape is very high performance and is made specifically for this purpose. Thanks for the help though. My past results have shown that sinking the video memory has been a big help.

The simple fact that he bought an XPS for heatsinks that won't even work properly stock is ridiculous. If you were anything close to xtreme in this sense FCG, you would have purchased your self some water blocks and ram sinks. Thanks MM, I appreciate it. I think I am the first ever to fit the Quadro FX 4500 heatsink on 7800GTX card....let alone run 2 in SLI! Anyway...onto the results!

Idle is only about 2-3C lower. These babies are hot. The AC unit I noticed (when I was just running one card because 2 wouldn't fit) was about 4-5C under that. So, I would say that the AC unit wins BUT just because it's fan moves A LOT more air. These units are DEAD QUIET even at 100%. Amazing really.

Now, the important part. Load. At full load the difference is outstanding. With the Zalmans temps went through the roof...almost 80C. With the Quadro designs (and with the AC's) the load is about 65C. Not bad if you ask me.

Either way... Beight extreme is all about using skill and knowledge (and sometimes sheer luck) to push the limits... It's not about having more money than common sense.

Arkangyl
09-26-2005, 08:50 PM
FCG, those Quadro sinks with the fan in the middle still exaust the hot air outside the case right? so the fans dont really need any direct overhead air to cool the card?

and as Vapor said, I think you can get a better fan in those coolers :p

Holst
09-27-2005, 09:58 AM

So what are you doing with the rest of the PC?

Can't fit water in this case. Too much with the VapoLS. Show me how I am supposed to fit a rad, pump, tubing and make it NEAT. -FCG

If the case is the Lian Li PC65, which I'm assuming it is, then I could fit two complete loops in that case, albeit with a bit of struggle. But one loop could not even be considered a challenge. I believe OPP or another of the big guys actually runs an LS/PC 65 with watercooling for the gfx cards.

I'd use dual low profile maze 4s, CSP MAG pump, t-line, and Thermochill PA160 installed at the front with some modding, or a Black Ice Pro II at the top above the optical drives.

That would not only cool remarkably better than your quadro heatsinks, but probably be quieter and most certainly be more extreme.

However, I'm beginning to realize that me trying to squeeze reason out of this choice of yours is silly because it's obvious there is no reason behind it other than this is exactly what you wanted to do. And for that, I have no argument. I hope you're enjoying them honestly and truly. ;)

Yeah, LOL....I went searching all over for them and they're simply not anywhere. FCG did exactly what he needed to do to get the best quiet aircooled SLI config.

Well, I went from not bothering to overclock at all, to peltier cooled video and chilly1 unit on the way soon, At this point, I wouldn't fault anyone for doing anything to get exactly what they want out of their computer!

The simple fact that he bought an XPS for heatsinks that won't even work properly stock is ridiculous. If you were anything close to xtreme in this sense FCG, you would have purchased your self some water blocks and ram sinks. I'm sorry, but I still can't believe the idiocy and immaturitu involved in this entire deal.

If the guy earns enough money that he can comfortably spend it on anything he wants without troubles, then why shouldn't he be allowed to without getting bashed at this forum? FCG is just living his dream, so let him. If you could I'm sure you'd find something else "stupid" to spend your cash on, and if not, then stick them under your mattress and be happy with that. I'm just happy for FCG to be able to do the things he wants without any bothers. So why arn't you?

If you were at all conscious, you might have noticed my last post where I said this:
However, I'm beginning to realize that me trying to squeeze reason out of this choice of yours is silly because it's obvious there is no reason behind it other than this is exactly what you wanted to do. And for that, I have no argument. I hope you're enjoying them honestly and truly. ;)

So yea, shut up? Thanks. :)

You do know that all you have to do to get VGA silencers to fit on DFI NF4 boards is to remove that flat oval metal shim from over the chipset hsf fins, right?

Yep, coolers worked awesome. They now belong to Cooper and are on the way to him. Check the 3DMark05 ranking in this forum...notice my #3 position with AIRCOOLED 7800GTX SLI setup...
