Hey guys, i'm lookin to buy soon and was wondering is there any physical difference between a overclocked out of the box 7800 GTX to a regular 7800 GTX?
The brand i'm thinking is a evga.
So can i overclock the non overclocked one to the same speeds or is there better chips on the O/C version?

Just a diffrent bios, card is the same.

A different bios that defaults to those speeds? Thats all? No cherry pickin eh?

Oh one last thing.. Does anyone know the ETA of the ultra cards if any?

Umm the bios are just edited to faster core clocks, and as far as the inquirer has informed us, the G71 has been cancelled.

OK thanks for the info.

Only a certain percent of the 78000GTXs can reach these speeds, not all are qualified to reach them. So only the better GTXs get the higher clocks.

so that means just get the one OC'd from the factory so you won't get a bad one?

Nope, afaik they don't cherry pick 7800gtxs so it's all a matter of luck i guess.

well i ment to also say so that you don't have to worry about getting a good or bad one.

Indeed! I got one that benches at 540/1425 (regular evga @450/1200) and my friend bought the overclocked xfx@490/1300, which is stuck at just over 510. :D

Yes and no. I had a 2.4c P4 that would do 3.5ghz on air, but I also had a 2.8c P4 that wouldn't do 3.2ghz. It's luck of the draw, but you are guarenteed a higher clocked card for life.

Well, i think i did well.. I just bought up 2 eVGA 256-P2-N538-AX With Battlefield 2 Bundle Geforce 7800GTX 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130235) at a local Micro Center last night.. They finally got them back in stock! Thank god cause it was the only way i could buy these up using the store credit card. That way i can keep the computer runing while i sell the 6800 Ultras on ebay and help pay most of this off.
Funny thing is that there web site and add paper had them at 599.99 and i got lucky that they marked both of them wrong at $529.99! heheh.. Nice saved 150 bucks."EDIT" Opps i guess they offically marked them at 529.99 since it shows that now on there site.
The crazy part is that there like bother and sister since there only 1 digit apart in serial numbers! I didnt even pick them out as i had them hold 2 over the phone before i got there..
The ruff part is that i'll have to wait till Sunday/Monday to get these babies hooked up since i have to watch the baby while the wife works! :( Those the brakes!
I hope they overclock well so i dont have to go for the trade up.

Hey guys i finally got my new evga 7800 GTX SLI cards installed with water cooling and first thing i notice is that i cant overclock these cards at all. I used to use ntune just to quickly set the core and mem clock and now that program says "No clocks reported".. Tried installing the newest version and same crap.
In the nvidia control menu under there clock tabs i cant get it to allow one single mhz more on neither the core or mem.
I've installed the coolbitz hack and that didnt do anything either.. Though i didnt go into the reg to mess with it if thats what you have to do.
I believe i'm using the 78.11 beta drivers.. Just installed those.
So what do ya gota do to have some fun?

WOw now i'm starting to freak out.. Tried benchin 3dmark 2k1 and 2k3 and both come up 4000 marks slower then my previous cards "6800 Ultra SLI". WTF!! :(

are you below 36c idle on the GPU's, when you start the test?

yeah why? Is there a temp bug or something?

You bet. might wanna do something about that...when i bench i have to start each test 2-3 times before getting fullspeed, and i've just got a VF700cu on mine...it's a sure pain in the arse.

Are you saying theres a cold bug under 40C?
cadaveca
09-19-2005, 10:32 PM
Pretty sure that's what i'm saying. Seems like it's not every card tho...bios related. And it's 36c and under i have noticed. This really sucks, becasue my card was doing that with the stock heatsink when ambient was lower than 20c.

HAHAHAHAHAH!!!! Damn man i think you got it! I turned the fans on the 2 rads down to bare min so hopefully the cards would heat up a bit.. Ran 3dmark 2k1 and got a score of 35,000+ from 31,000. I was like hhrmmmm.. Then i ran 2k3 and got a score of 30,896!!!! Yeah baby! haha..
Well.. I'm sure this could get alot better once i get a differenet BIOS that dont have that cold bug. I've never thought somehting would run faster hotter! haha.
Thanks a ton!
Oh, know what bios i should grab or where to look?

A little hint like what forum to hunt?? I'm tired out after hunting down a volt mod for these and then shopping around for parts.. Blew 4 hours there alone and now i have a massive headache! lol

Just a little update:
All you need to do to get these cards to run full speed is to edit the bios and take out the throttling speed.. Not the temp monitoring as well... So take out the throttling and keep your temp monitoring!
eclypse

Well, i've come to find out that using either a modded bios made from a member here in another thread with no temps nor throttle mode and my original bios edited by taking out the throttle mode made no difference in overclock and final 3dmark score.
So its not like the only thing you can do with water cooling your card is loose the temp monitoring to get these cards to run full speed.
Onto the overclocking..
So far i'm limited to my mem cooling.. Since these OCZ BGA copper heatsinks have been used before twice and now the double sided tape is trashed and not making perfect contact by any means i can only get less then 1400Mhz on them stable.. ruffly around 1386Mhz. I have 2 sets of 8 frozencpu monster BGA copper heatsinks on the way
The GPU i have benched up to 530Mhz.. now i cant remember if thats 530+40 or just 530.
Not bad i guess with no mods done.. YET!
Strange part is that i can get the mem to bench at 1400Mhz or more only if i down clock the GPU to say under 500.. Like 480-490.. So i dont know if thats just like a power issue or what.
My top scores right now for 3dmark off the top of my head:
3dmark 01 = 35,800+
3dmark 03 = 32,000+
3dmark 05 = 13,000+
Do these scores seem about right for my rig? I'm using the 78.03 drivers i believe.
