View Full Version : The Dimes Project

I thought that I had better create a little thread on what dimes is and its requirements.
It doesn't require any CPU power, so it works well running with D2OL or FAH or any other project. It requires Java, but since D2OL also requires it, everyone probably already has it installed.
The goal is to map the internet. The client sends out traceroutes to various IPs and maps them. I'd like to warn people who have bandwidth usage limits, even though this project doesn't use a lot of bandwidth, it might not be for you, but I still encourage you to at least try it. The client itself seems pretty stable and the project admins are really into it and seem to communicate well. Sometimes the client may respond a little slowly, but I think that is just the nature of java.
The installation of the client is nice and easy, just choose a username and password, choose to join Xtremesystems in the team list (interesting to find as its not alphabetical....) and hey presto watch your points and the teams climb.
The only thing to be aware of is that if you have download/upload limits on your connection this will take some of your traffic. I think its about 20-35mb a day from what I remember seeing, Im uncapped so it doesnt really affect me.
The official site is here:
http://www.netdimes.org
Free-DC of course has stats here:
http://stats.free-dc.org/new/projpage.php?proj=dimes
The client is limited to one per machine irrelevant of CPUs, but it does run great on low end systems (PII etc) as all you really need is an internet connection that is always on and a connection to that (if more than one rig).
The client can be tweaked to work 4 times a minute (or less) and also the amount of bandwidth used, the less you use the less you score.
Points are uploaded every hour so its a nice project to watch your stats rocket up.
When I first started running this project I was worried that my internet connection would lag, but after running for a couple of weeks no one at home has complained ( 5 of us using it) my usenet access is exactly the same and my gaming ping hasnt changed.
Currently the XS team is about to enter the top 20 overall, we are 6th highest producer overall and me and helhiem are starting to spend alot of time in the top 10 producers also...!
Any questions give me a shout and I will do my best to answer them.

i think, they want to see how different servers/ips are connected. maybe they also want to see if you can make the inet faster if you know "shorter" routes.

so what esactly does the client do?
it connects to different servers and then the tool is checking hwat routes were used and how fast the response was etc?

Hope this helps:
How does the Internet look like? How does it evolve?
DIMES is a distributed scientific research project, aimed to study the structure and topology of the Internet, with the help of a volunteer community (similar in spirit to projects such as SETI@Home).
Due to the way the Internet is engineered, distributing the Internet mapping effort is very important, and the only efficient way to measure the Internet structure is by asking you to participate. What we ask is not so much your CPU or bandwidth (which we hardly consume), but rather, your location. The more places we'll have presence in, the more accurate our maps will be. Understanding the structure and function of the Internet is an important research task, that will allow to make the Internet a better place for all of us.
The DIMES agent performs Internet measurements such as TRACEROUTE and PING at a low rate, consuming at peak 1KB/S. The agent DOES NOT send any information about its host's activity/personal data, and sends ONLY the results of its own measurements. Aside from giving a good feeling, running the DIMES agent will also provide you with maps of how the Internet looks from your home (currently) and will (in the future) provide you with a personalized 'Internet weather report' and other user-focused features.

Rod, just put one blank rig in your DMZ where you don't care what happens. I am doing this by leaving a lappy hooked up at the house in toronto until the new owners take posession early next month...It has only a bare bottom xp sp2 build and enough java to run dimes

It's not my hardware firewall... it's norton internet security. I run it on all of my rigs.

I've been wondering this lately: can somebody tell me what a asnode and a asedge exactly is?
It seems that i'm the top user for the asnodes, but I really don't know what it is

Is it just dl and install the dimes file i have dl from there site, thats all i have to do,or maybe some other prog to.

Hi Rocker, we might only be at 31% but we are in the top 3 for production just about everyday. So please install on your farm and get diming, it runs great with D2OL.
Thanks !

Ok,i install them on 4 rigs for now, lets see how much it will give.
I think its ok to run Dimes on PII and PI rigs,i have 2 of them,PII 200mhz and PI 100mhz,i will hook up those two also,so thats 6 rigs in total, that will bring a nice number ;) :woot:.
Wow,it say's that it cant run Dimes becaus java is not installed, how is this possible D2OL needs java to and D2OL is running on this rig  .
Anybody??
Helheim
11-17-2005, 04:48 PM
It depends on how you have D2OL installed. If you used rod's installer you need to add the “C:\XS_D2OL\D2OL1\jre\bin” folder to your path and then it will work.

Its ok now,its running.
But is there a prog to monitor Dimes, like Dspy for D2OL is,i mean how can i see how many points i have already done, and how many times does it upload results,is it also every 6 hours,or??
So anybody can join the XS team?

Well Ive added a couple of PIIIs at my new office, but nothing major. I "infected" my sisters and dads systems as well. I can get away with Dimes as its not really noticeable.
How do you get to any setup or anything? I click the dimes agent in Start -> ... but nothing happens. When installing i chose 'use Dimes screensaver' and it does show just to crash most of the time when exiting from it.

CAn't say I've ever chosen the Screensaver option, but then, I don't use one (Hogs resources, and most Monitors can blank themselves).

nless you are running VM's then having more RAM or a faster processor won't help, you can only have 1 DIMES agent per OS.
Bandwisth should be fine. I have a 40GB/Month cap, and I run 5 agents 24/7, and 2 a lot of the time, and I hardly notice it. So I'll be adding more soon (This weekend hopefully :D )

Has anyone here used a wireless card to get internet with their vmwares?? I don’t think my dad's is going to go for me running ~4 Ethernet cables to my room alone. Instead, can I get a wireless router (for my room) plug it into the Ethernet cable, set the wireless network up, and make sure all of my comps have a wireless card in them? Then, when I set up the vms, can I just set up bridged and it will work?? Or, a better idea, can I get a 4-way router, and use the cable from the old router that goes into my computer?? I think that might be a better (and cheaper) idea. Any input on either of those ideas would be much appreciated.

01-04-2006, 03:12 PM
i would go with an 8 port hub so you have room to expand and so you do not have complication with the other router such a 2 dHCP's and so on. I put a second router in my LAN once and i could not access the other comps on the other side of the router, plus a hub is cheaper.
a hub is what i use it works great.

I thought that's what might have happened, which is understandable with all of the work he put into getting those VMS running.
Too bad he let it get to him that much.
With the three machines I have left, I'm at about my maximum right now. It's not too shabby really but not even close to what I was producing for a time.

I know I'm REALLY late to the game here, but I'm trying to set up dimes and it seems like I'm getting port blocked by my router. I've looked around but cant find out what ports I need to unblock to get this to work. Thanks in advance!

Can't make an open assumption like that. FIOS by verizon in Tampa has a slower download (by a 2 full megabytes) then the equally priced Roadrunner by Brighthouse service. FIOS's upload however is faster by a megabyte.

Those are all udp ports right? I got no option to edit the fw's icmp settings which I think Dimes also uses?
Thing is, in the messages screen all I get is INFO: Destination host didn't reply. with each traceroute or ping, but in the graph screen I do see nodes flying about. Hehe the info page off the project is also a lil scarce :(
Edit: I got an 18/1 adsl2+ line with unlimited bandwidth, how many clients could I run? I got a p3 I can put on dimes if I install an os on it ( or linux live cd? ) and my gf's p4. I can run some virtual machines on my main rig to but I'm running SMP also so idk if that's a smart move?

Though... I don't think one agent running with 18/1mbit adsl2+ is nearly enough so I'll try and get the old p3 and my gf's p4 running this to, might try and run vmware on the p3 as I don't want to mess up my SMP folding on my main rig. Bleh second time I said this lol I am still waking up sorry ;)

Jinu pm'd me, but that was after I made that last post so I think he must have seen it and thought he'd leave it there? We did agree I'd let Victor and Luke post the results off my mediation attempts. If he didn't see that last post when he pm'd me idk even if I can delete posts myself thought only edit?

Well I need some confirmation from you guys it won't interfear with FAH on my main rig.. I can use my gf's p4 2.4g running xp sp2 to host the vmware clients, but atm that rig is down as well as my old p3 system. Down meaning I don't have room to set it up, I had a nice hobby room here with all my gear but we have a guest who is occopying that room so I had to take the main rig downstairs in the living room just to be able to use it. Bedroom is to small to hold my desk, it's on the large side, so not really any choiche then using the diner table lol.
I'll pick up the p4 and put it atleast on a regular agent today I promise, with vmware comming tomorrow or next week, on either the p4 or p3 ( can a p3 733 run vmware? ) Can one use MS virtual pc instead off vmware?

Heres a Taskmanager snap. Each virtual machine does use a snip of CPU cycles. It get noticeable at about 10-20 VMs. But under that and it sho8uld be really unoticeable. Also it uses a lot of ram for each VM.
So about 4mins per VM per 15 hours of running. BTW that also includes the VM startup usage which is a good chunck of that time usage. After startup its very small.

Running 4gb atm though xp 32bit, but don't think I'll run out off ram soon. FAH does take allot already, each worker thread is twice your vmware's hehe.
I got Vmware workstation 5.5.3 that will do right? I already got dsl though idk which build, dl and burned about 3 months ago so atleast as new as the guides.
Have to free up some disk space first, hdd's are cramped already. About 100 meg per vmware right?

I don't do DSL. But for my TinyXP setup its set at 64Megs.

Mhm yeah I could do that to. Linux vs Windows doesn't matter for Dimes right?

Nope. Don't think so. Lots of people had good experience with the Linux version.

Meh stupid question really when if I read through the section it's said you can use your older rigs without problem and Dimes uses java
Installing win2k on the p3 atm, don't want to mess with vm to much on this rig.
Edit: seems my ide hdd has bitten the dust. Installation couldn't complete it keeps hanging while copying files. Going to try some older hdd's I have ( 10gb,4gb and 2gb flavour anyone  ).
Dimes will run on pretty much anything.........used to run it on my Duron 800 notebook.

Just checked the agent on my main rig as it's been running some hours and I thought from reading the threads here it should have shown some points already but still nothing?
Isn't there anything else that I have to do to get it running? Or do the statistics take awhile to update?

Yup I noticed :D
P3 not running yet, so just one agent on the main rig. Had a party today, gf turned 23 last week but most off our friends and relatives came over today. Half past eight now, all day serving beverages and cutting pie IS tiresome, might be bad night off sleep to though. Tomorrow the p3 will go online, as well as putting the agent om my gf's p4.
So... there aren't any other tweaks involved with getting the most out off this project, just install and let it rip? Thought reading somewhere you could set intervals ect but I can't find it in the application.

Yeah the p3 and gf's still not on this sorry for that attention hasn't really been focusing on this yet. Need to finish some other things, tie up some loose ends and more importantly, during daytime I got to take care off my 7 month old boy.
For all you guys who think the missus being at home raising the kids is having an easy job, trade with her for a month or so. I'll bet you'll be buying her some flowers more often.
No excuses... p3 is right next to me, still has hdd issues I need to sort. But first f@h ;)

Agent 2 running on the p4, p3 still not doing anything usefull sorry for that. Points will only really show up when I got the p3 running vm's, as both my quad and the gf's p4 os's are just the way I like em ( besides that nasty virus which took me 7 hours off scanning and cleaning on a diagnostic mode running os  ). Probably lost allot off points on dimes not being started automaticly, with all the recent reboots

Riptide how does this work, I notice wireless being 30% less points then wired, while I thought it was using just a certain max bandwidth per client? The p3 still isn't up :(
[XC] riptide

Some people noticed drops in wireless in the past. But I sure as hell don't. My entire setup is now wireless. Even the ISP is wireless. What I do notice is though that on most of my host machines I never get full 240 points per hour. usually a lot less. Its in the VM's that I get close to ~240.
It uses a tiny amount of bandwith.
