I've got a venice and wonder how some of the other mem controllers in athlon line compared.

I believe Venice mc is very much alike (or identical) Winchester's. AMD just loosened some timings in it to make it capable running 8-ranks of memory @ stock speed.
Worse memory bandwidth with E3/6-revision cpus is a result of those looser timings.

8 ranks of memory? Is this to run 4 double sided DIMMs or am I missing something?

They're all the same. If you run 4 or 8 banks, skanks, franks or whatever you want, it will be worse than using less RAM, same as all memeory controllers forever. The specific killer is the command rate going to 2T when using 4 skanks really affects the momeory controllers performance.

There are worse problems than having too much RAM, or so many skanks that you measue them in mutiples of 4.

I recommend settling for what you have, cause there's nothing noticeably better in a 939 since their conception.
