Hi, this is my first post here on the forums!

Im busy getting together the tools for building a phase change unit and after researching on these forums have got everything pretty much sorted except for the vacuum pump.

I want to get a proper one as Im not one for getting frustrated with the wrong tools or tools that dont work propperly.

The one I found that is reasonably cheap but looks like quality is the Javac one with these specs:

CC 31 Vacuum Pump
The JAVAC CC two stage 1.3 cubic foot/minute oil sealed rotary vane vacuum pump is basic equipment to evacuate domestic, automotive and light commercial refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. Suitable for use with R134a, R22 and compatible refrigerants.

This one seems to be of much bigger capacity, I found the datasheet and it says it pulls a vacuum of 5x10 to the power of -4 milibar (unsure as to how to convert to microns)

Any thoughts will be appreciated. Although the latter might be more powerfull it is second hand (Not ot fond of second hand) but its cheaper. If the CC30 in the first link will do the job then I might just as well go for that

Thanks
Johann

The only one you mentioned that I see now and then on Ebay is Robinair, I see they pull 20 micron vacuums mostly, this is decent right?

more so than I think. Guys, how far do you really vacuum? Isn't like oil's surface tension lose around 200 micron anyway?

wdrzal, have you owned/used a javac pump? Anyone else have had any experience with javac pumps?

I found a nice pump, the inlet and outlet is KF25 flange fittings, will that be the right fittings?

the second pump is the better one These can be services and rebuit there are replacable valves and other internal parts that are cheap.. In the stated a sinilar pmp is 450.00 USD
The first pump in teh Us sells for 150.00 USD

I would get teh second on (Used) and change the oil and test with a micron guage to see what it pulls if it wont pull 100 microns withthe guage attached to teh pump rebuild it.. 30,00 what is that in USd like 45?? No t bad.. worst cast it cost you 100 to rebuild it..and you got a 450.00 pump...

OK, i bought this pump as chilly1 reccomended. I will see how it runs and service it if needed. Is there any way of testing its vacuum without a vacuum gauge to see if its sufficient?

OK now next thing is a torch, I have it narrowed to two options, they both will cost me approx £50

1) Mapp torch from my local hardware store (Nice and compact)
2) Brazing kit (http://www.proopsbrothers.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Brazing___SilverSoldering_28.html )

which one would you think is the better option?
