is it true that you don't have to have telephone service to get a DSL internet connection as long as I have the phone jack ready?


i was under the impression you gotta have phone service in order to get DSL... no?

Yep, it's true. Dial-tone and DSL are completely seperate(they are combined with what is known as a dSLAM). The filters you use are basically low-pass filters and filter out the upper frequencies which is where the DSL signal is.

Companies are now starting to offer what they call "Naked aDSL" where you don't even need dial-tone.

I think they are/were supposed to offer it for $19.95 or $24.95... or something like that.

It really depends on the company that offers DSL service. Technically yes, if you have a phone wire then you can have DSL.

no.. the Comcast cable internet service sucks cows ass.. :( there's no way im gonna continously paying $61 a month. Horrible service too... pathetic company.. I am sooo... glad I stopped the service. :)

I hear you about cable sucking... too bad I'm too far away from the local telco central office to get aDSL. :( Thing I also find appealing to aDSL is that you don't share bandwidth with your neighbors. Even though I have 5mb cable, it slows down every evening during the week and sporadically on the weekends due to "neighborhood traffic". :(

And if anybody has the chance to hop on the telco's "fiber to the premise" or what some of them call "FIOS"... DO IT NOW!!! You can get 30mb service for $39.99!!! Uploads are 2-5mb too. :D

bad news.. SBC DSL service does not service without the phone service purchased. :(

that sucks to hear I have insightbb and its always rock solid speed wise have 6mb down and a craptastic 512k up :rolleyes: I could get free service from the w.i.s.p I work for but its speeds arent anywhere near the cable service so I opt to pay.

would love to get the fiber to the home when it becomes available in my area though :banana:
