View Full Version : R23 carrier question

So the good news...

I just picked up the last of what I need to put together the High stage of my Cascade :D

I now have some 402a which should work well for the high stage, along with some Mineral based oil which I'll need as well. AB and MO were listed for 402a, and MO was in stock. I had thought that polyester would work with 402a but it's not listed so I'll be changing the oil in my larger compressor again

I've got some R23 on the way which will be here next week, and since it's 'the right price' it'll be the low stage refrigerant.

I see that there isn't an oil for R23 listed which I assume I'll have to use a carrier. Would 402a work well enough if I just use Mineral oil and R23/402a 90/10 or something to that effect or less? I know a lot of guys use R290 to carry, but I don't have any, and I do have a fresh bottle of 402a. I just want to make sure it'll mix well enough to use.

I still haven't got a second compressor yet, so I'm in no real rush, just that the R23 came up and I jumped on it.

Cheers guys

You can use POE with R23.

I did a little digging here and it seems that ppl use both poe and mo with R23 and it seems to work.

I saw the link to a site saying that you should add a hydrocarbon oil additive http://www.refrigerants.com/hfc-r23.htm but I'm not sure what that is, unless they're saying to put some r290 in or something.

That's great then, I have mineral and polyester here so I'm pretty much set either way. I think I'll use POE since that's more the general concensus.

I just hope that this weekend proves fruitful in my search for a second compressor, I'm seeing a retired fridge tech about a few things, so I hope he's got something for me :D 1/2HP or better 404/507 low temp would be lurvly :slobber:

When people say mineral oil do they mean that stuff you get at a pharmacy? Or is there compressor grade stuff?

I don't know if I'd use the pharmacy stuff. lol

I get everything I use from the refrigeration supplier, and I'm pretty sure it's not quite the same, but I honestly wouldn't know.

Wouldn't it be funny if it was exactly the same thing repackaged? :fact:

How much is the r23 you can get?

So some more very good news for the Cascade project...

http://www.imgbox.co.uk/uploads/8a7106e7dd.jpg (http://www.imgbox.co.uk)

I'm struggling to find the info I need on it, but written is...

Sanyo
Compressor model C-D 40L51
1996.8.27 (date I assume)

Was new and prepped for a unit but never used, and he said it should be a low temp 3/4HP compressor. It's quite big that's for sure!

If I can get it sorted out, I'll use that on the high stage with 402a, and the 5/8HP unit for the Low stage. Should give be better results :)

Funny thing is, it's got the usual 3 ports on the top, but there's 3 on the bottom that are plugged off with rubber stoppers. I can't find anything on it at sanyo's site, might have to request a pdf or something from their discontinued range. I need to know what size start cap, cos it hasn't got one on it already, and he didn't have it.

Looks good, and I picked up a few used oil sep's. I'll have to check 'em out and see if they are suitable. AC&R S-5181 and says it's ok for 134/22/404/507 so I'm pretty sure they'll be fine.

I also got a few low temp TEV's. Marked for R502, -60 to -25. I don't know for sure if they'll work for 402a on the high stage or not, but they're new as well. I have a feeling they should be ok.

He had about 5 or 6 decent condensors for me as well, all pulls from chillers and such, one from a refrigerated centrifugal unit of all things  but they're 2 and 3 row oversized condensors, too big to fit a mach2 lol but not too much bigger, so really ideal for Cascade work :D

Went for a trip this weekend and brought back all sorts from a guy I've met, so hopefully he'll keep letting me know when he's got a few things around :D

When I get it all unloaded and sorted out, I'll have to take some pics.

Pythagoras, I PM'd you but I dont' know if it got through, you can PM back if you like :)

Stop using Infernal Exploder ;)

Im using R23 with mineral oil with no problems at all. Just a little R290 was added for oil return

He actually supplied me with some 'Fuchs' SP46 oil and not knowing for sure what it was, I just took it and looking it up, it's actually AB synthetic Their site says it's ideal for R13 and all R22 based refrigerants, so it should work for the R23 as well. Lucky one I suppose, but I'll double check it's miscibility with R23 first.

Yeah yeah I like infernal exploder :p:

Well the good news is the R23 has arrived and is in hand, so that's one less thing to worry about :D I picked up a few other things at the same time so other than a suction flexi and evap head I'm pretty much ready to start properly assembling all this stuff.

Bad news is the Auto Gearbox just fell out of my car, so I'll be seeing another short delay in that progress. I guess it's just a little bit of bad luck.

Hopefully the next thread on it is pics of the unit as I make progress :)

I think the one that Berkut has up for sale is R290/R23 on the Low Stage.

I didn't see any results from his, but it should perform well. Boils at -82 or so, and I'm hoping that if I undercharge it a little and run it no load for initial testing, I should be able to pull hard enough on it to see -100 or pretty close. It's just a number, and I know it won't do anywhere near that on a system, but it'd be cool to see it anyway.

I'm pretty sure it's gonna have a chilly1 block when it's finished, but I've got a decent block to do the testing with at first, then once I know it's ready, I'll swap over to the big guy's block.

I'm looking forward to it :D

Macci at least had two cascades working with R23.
