hi there...

i've downloaded atitool 25beta which supports overclocking for 7800gtx/gt. i choosed the option "find max gpu core clock" and atitool worked about 30 mins. then the system rebooted and the windows errorprotocol was shown with the message that atitool has caused the system to reboot. well. not special yet. after starting atitool after the reboot it showd me the warning that the tested clocks were too high. ok, nothing special...
i set the clocks to stock clocks (400/1000) and continued using the pc...
but after 10 mins i recognized the loud noise coming out of my tower - what can i say: the damn fan of my 7800gt is running at high rpm. the first thing i thought was that atitool changed the settings in the forceware driver, so i loaded the drivers defaults and rebooted the system. usually the gpu fan stops running that fast while entering the windows "welcome screen". but this time the fan kept on running loud.
after another reboot no improvemet. so i uninstalled the forceware-drivers and rebooted. then i installed again the 77.77 forceware. during the setup of the drivers the fan went silent - i were sure that installing the driver will solve the problem.
restarted the system again and what happened? nothing. after booting and loading windows the fan still kept beeing loud as a bunch of bees.

also, i tested some changes in the forceware overclocking window (checking and unchecking the option "fan always on"), but nothing helped.
my last hope was to use a system restore point - loaded and rebooted: but still no improvement. as this didn't helped either i began to become nervous :p:

so whats the problem?! wtf did this atitool do to my 7800gt =/

What has happened, and I'm guessing here, is ATiTool ran your fan at 100% to find the max core. When it did this it probably wrote that to the registry of ATiTool. Have you tried uninstalling ATiTool and see it that helps? If you have I would recommend you get into regedit and delete every ATiTool instance. Once you do that reboot and see if all is well.

*EDIT*
Just thought of something. ATiTool overclocks your 2D settings too. This is probably why it's so noticable. When you are playing a game it more than likely kicks in to 100% but because of headphones/speakers you just don't notice it.

use the coldbits and uncheck fan speed max or use rivatuner to clean the registry

as said in my first post, i loaded the drivers defaults (i did this with rivatuner) and i uninstalled atitool, too. but the fan still kept on running loud.

but the best comes next: today i turned on my pc and after booting windows the fan went silent. yesterday i rebooted thousend times and installed/uninstalled drivers, tools etc, and nothing helped and today i'm booting and the fan is running silence as nothing has happened...

i have no clue what this was about, but right now, it seems that all is running fine again. just rebooted the system 2 times to be sure that it's working generally - both times it worked, so i'm sure that my fan speed control works now :F

it's kinda strange: 2 days it ran horribly loud and now it works as nothing had happened without any reason. lol..

@major_a: ye, i know that the fan is louder/running faster in 3d-mode, but it was getting my nerves that its also that loud in windows/2d-mode.

i'm happy that it's working again. already thought about rma'ing the card, because i read in a pc magazine about defective fan speed controls of some 7800gt's.
*phew* :p:
