View Full Version : Is it worth keeping my Vapo PE?

Hey all,

I've got an old Vapo PE overclocking my P4 2.6 at 3.4 for over 2 years now and she's been rock solid. I also modded the case to and fitted a Watercooling setup in the upper chamber which cools an old 9800 and nb.

Now I've been looking / researching into doing a major upgrade. Basically want to get the following

-AMD X2 4400
-DFI NF4 SLI-RD
-CRUCIAL BALL TRACERS 2x1GB
-7800GTX OC
-PC&P 510 PSU ( 12v 38a Rail )

Now to my surprise the Vapo PE sounds a bit outdated. The 160w power seems not enough for todays CPU's. However I'm not lookings at sub -40c temperatures. Just wondering if Its still worthwhile setting it up with the new specs? Or should I sell and stick to a straight watercooling rig.

Just wondering if its worth the hassle? Two PSU may be required for this new setup. I dont want to spend a huge amount of time setting it all up to be disappointed with issues.

Can anyone offer some advice?

Cheers

i dont think you should use a PE on a X2.
You'll end up around 0 oCelcius probably... those X2 produces some serious heat.

another option is to get the PE modded

I would keep it and mod the PE! Regas to R404a gives it a -44 ish temp with no load!!not bad!

Mod that PE and you're just asking for grief. I know ppl have had good results with 'em, but the restart issue, power startup issues, shortened lifespan just aren't worth it.

Get a mains powered freezer for that cpu, will do so much more for you, and be easier to deal with as far as power goes.

Then you take the Vapo, and find a case that it'll fit into and mod the mount to fit your graphics card :woot:

I've got 2 old PE's myself, and I'm working on a slim evap conversion for the one, so I can play Crossfire when it's out :D

Really though, you'll be pushing the limit of the Vapo for that cpu if you want to oc to any great extent. Sell the Vapo, and reinvest into a mach2Gt, or a custom unit from Chilly1 (of course) :toast:

Thanks all for the suggestions. Greatly appreciated.:toast:

I'd probably be happy with 0c load for the AMD. I fogot to mention this rig will only be for gaming. So my overclocks will have to be rock solid stable. I'll intend to tweak test etc to find the right oc for the system. Then will leave it be until the next upgrade :D

I'm trying to weigh up the options here. Still have low cpu temps with the vapo or go straight out watercooling as a new Vapo/Mach/Prom will be too expenisve. Especially trying to get it shipped out to Aussie land :zombie:

So its either wc all the way with temps of 25-50 or Vapo at 0-10?

Also realistically how much of a mhz gain would I see with load temps of -40 compared to 0. Or even -110 as I've seen on a few systems in XS :slobber:

XS user Kayl (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/member.php?u=6261) is from australia and maybe he can hook you up with a custom unit :)
