Elpida today announced its next-generation DDR3 SDRAM memory chips for future notebooks, desktop PCs and servers. The new DDR3 architecture will feature a high-speed data transfer of up to 1333MHz, which is double the speed of the current DDR2 architecture in volume production. The company has already developed a 512 Megabit part but plans to develop higher capacity 1 Gigabit and 2 Gigabit chips. The new DDR3 architecture keeps the low-voltage operation benefits of the DDR2 architecture but significantly boosts the speed.

Specifically the PC industry is transitioning towards lower voltage, multi core systems with an increased need for memory bandwidth as a result of multi core architecture. This technology will assist in that area.

they should have made speeds 1337 instead of 1333

I've been waiting for DDR3 for quite a bit. With GDDR3 reaching such amazing speeds, especially those from Samsung, this will very soon eclipse DDR2.
