I posted this on the D2OL forums a few days ago and people seem to be interested.

DIMES is a pretty cool project IMO. It doesn't require any CPU power, so it works well running with D2OL or FAH or any other project. It requires Java, but if you run D2OL, you already have it installed, but mostother people do too.

The goal of the project is to map the internet. The client sends out traceroutes to various IPs and maps them. I'd like to warn people who have bandwidth usage limits, even though this project doesn't use a lot of bandwidth, it might not be for you, but I still encourage you to at least try it. The client itself seems pretty stable and the project admins are really into it and seem to communicate well. Sometimes the client may respond a little slowly, but I think that is just the nature of java.

The official site is here:

Free-DC has stats here:
http://stats.free-dc.org/new/projpage.php?proj=dimes

And the XS Free-DC stats are here:
http://stats.free-dc.org/new/teamstats.php?proj=dimes&team=XtremeSystems

I've also created signatures for DIMES that can be found here:
http://sigs.canyonlake.net/dimes/dimessetup.php

You'll need to create an account which is done the first time you install the program. I have taken the liberty to create a team for XtremeSystems, so make sure you choose that during your initial setup.

I think XS would be an especially good team for this project because there are members from so many different countries. Because of this, the traceroutes will be from more spread out places and it will map better and more of the internet.

There is one thing to note, they limit you to one client per computer, so don't bother trying to install it more than once. I haven't run this project a lot, so I won't be able to answer all questions, but I will try, or at least point you in the right direction.

You can also go into the properties window (Agent->Properties). In there you can adjust how often it does traceroute and how much bandwidth to use. So if you are on 56K/ISDN, you can lower the bandwidth usage so it doesn't effect your browsing if you happen to experience any problems.

I also suggest reading through this topic, as it will answer a lot of basic questions:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=72137

I hope you'll at least give it a try. XS is currently ranked 8th in daily production, but most of the teams ahead of XS have a massive output, so any help would be nice.
