maybe using an ati shim will do the trick...

i dont know the dimensions of the cpu, but it looks pretty small. i have an ati shim sitting in front of me now, and a dothan coming in a few days (thanks lithan! :D), so i'll try this. anyone tried it before? how well did it work?

nice, the height of the shim looks a little thin, but we'll see.

I just use my woody 2.6C's heatspreader - the base where the core touches has been lapped so that it ends up as the right height.

I use the stock protection witch is glued to the stock cooler coming whit ct 479. i just set it on the cpu

i just checked... its too big. then i went to grab a k6 heatspreader and i broke a working 200mhz cpu in half ;(. it will fit with a little modification i think... at least the k6 heatspreader will go on my athlons just fine LOL.
try putting layers of insulation tape on the pcb whare that shim normally goes, cut little strips and lay the on top of eachother until the desired height is reached......
easy eh? also good for north bridges, like when you have to mount industrial iron-furnace cooler sized things to the original mounting holes, which puts stress on the core....

How thick it is ? I know the dothan cores height are 0.82mm. If the ATI shim is about 0.7~0.8 would be perfect

its a little shorter than a thoroughbred core, so i'm thinking it should work. barely shorter though, it may even cause problems. its really thin, so i might be albe to sand off a little bit to make it fit

lol...how are you going to protect the ATI core? :P

I think a ihs is for more protection, after having much pressure with the ati shim, youre core can still crush!
i just used a 2.4c

i wish i had a p4 heatsspreader, but i dont. i had the ati shim laying around... so i used it. btw, the ati card has a rather large heatsink epoxied to it, so no shim is needed.

Correction to info below: It is the 1/32th part that you need, not the 1/16th as I indicated below. The SKU number below is not the correct #, as you need a 1/32th thick piece. The rest of the measurements are correct.
Go to Lowes and where they have threaded rods and steel, you will also find aluminum stock. Locate SKU #215983 which is a 1/16" x 1.5" x 48" piece of flat "bar". (Incorrect - see "correction" above - It is the 1/32th, not the 1/16th" thickness which is equivalent to .80mm), just shy of the Dothan core's .82mm thickness and this can easily be overcome by a few pieces of electrical tape or equivalent product.
The 1.5" (or 38mm) width will fit the socket, with just a tiny overlap on the side opposite the lock down screw, as the Dothan silicone is 35mm wide. If you cut a 35mm length of this flat aluminum and drill out a 12mm x 18mm (or 18mm x 18mm if you prefer) opening for the core you will have a custom made shim for the Dothan.
Alternatively, if using a screw down type of sink like a Zalman, the use of small foam pads, available in the section of the hardware stores where they sell felt pads, will protect the core, working just like the small rubber pads that are on all XP cpus.
Both of these suggestions have been brought up before in the Dothan "tips" thread.

Very nice cirthix :toast:
. What have you used to atach the shim to thr processor ? Regular glue ? Have you checked the contact ?

i just used some dap, which is good because its relatively strong and easily removable.
