View Full Version : Windows XP 64 edition?
hey guys
basicly i just wanted to know if its safe to go to the 64 os now? i mean driver wise and all that. i want or need to buy a legit copy of windows and dont want to buy the 32bit version when they have the 64 version out. im running the DFI ultra-D Ati video card plextor burner and sound blaster plat live sound card. just want to know if im going to run into driver issues before i buy, any help you guys can provide would save me alot of head aches...
thx perc,
its all there driver wise but it is no walk in the park yet
why not just try it before you buy?
yeah i wish i could :) ive been reading and it seems that there are still bugs and its not just like installing the 32bit as far as driver suport...
thx perc,

I don't have it yet either, but I was planning to wait for at least the first service pack. At that point, a lot of the bugs should be straightened out. If you're dying to mess around with 64 bit OSes you could always d/l a Live CD of an AMD64 GNU/linux distro.
how do i do that? i had a beta version around here somewhere but never installed it. i think im just going to wait a little longer before i buy. maybe like you just said wait til they start selling it with a sp1 wich i dont believe they have yet am i correct?

I actually have it and it is not worth installing at this point, there is limited driver support as many manufacturers are not considering it as mainstream therefore not developing drivers for it. Bunch of sh%$*^ but thats how it is. Stay with the 32bit for awhile till it(64bit matures or even wait till the Vista release comes out.

From all of the user reports I have heard, Windows XP 64-bit is a POS at the moment. Avoid it.
yeah i was afraid you guys were going to say this.... is it worth setting up on another drive and dual booting the system thus allowing me to atleast play with it and still be able to boot into win xp 32bit for normal use?
thx perc,

I'm using it right now, and I like it. It feels real snappy, but then again all new installs do,lol. I'm downloading the x64 patch for Far Cry right now and from what I hear its pretty dam sweet.
I have all the drivers I need except, TV tuner drivers from ATI. I have it set up right now for dual booting, so to watch TV I have to go back to 32bit.

I've decided to stay away til vista comes out. By the time vista comes out, then the driver makers will get on the ball.
well lets just say i can find drivers for my dvdrw drives my sound card and my video card whats left? what about dvd plyers like power dvd and mp3 progs and crap like that? do you have to find 64bit versions and if so what are the odds of finding all these progs? im just worried about not being able to run my usal progs in win64 thats why i made this thread i wanted to see how you guys with win64 are making out so please keep the posts commin i need to hear from you guys....

That is the very reason I dual booted with XP and x64 that way if something doesn't work right I just go back to XP with a reboot.
You really have nothing to lose by trying it yourself except time.

peeps with XPx32 Pro can upgrade to XPx64 for FREE if they wish, but you wont be able to re-install XPx32 after you upgrade

thx perc,
powerDVD works fine in x64 as do winamp, iTunes, bsplayer, etc etc
only useful tool not available right this minute is Daemon Virtual Drive, and the 32bit version will not run in x64
K had some issues with BF2 crashing while in x64, BUT, that could be a DVD issue (basically, everytime it crashed it would nuke teh DVD and it wouldn't burn correctly - however, whenever K play BF2 now, the disc is always removed from the player after verification and no crashes so far :fingerscrossed: )
as already said, try the dual boot option and try it for yourself
how can i try it for free? thx for the info man its good to know that xp64 has all the working progs i need. i think i want to try it. i would just flat out buy it but part of me is still saying "try it before you buy it!" so if youd be so kind to point me in the right direction that would be cool.

I'm running x64 right now and I find it good for day to day use. There are the teething pains that are to be expected with any very new OS, especially one that is substantially different from it's predecessor. So I'll narrow it down into a simple pro/con list:
Pros
1) You are on the bleeding edge of technology:D
2) Very snappy OS.
3) Support for large amounts of memory (big +).
4) Substantial performance improvements in certain 64 bit applications (Cinebench 64 is one notable app...rendering improved about 30% for me).
5) Decent driver support for major hardware components (chipset, video card, etc).
6) Most 32 bit apps (and games;)) work fine.
7) Sisoft Sandra has 64 bit support.
Cons
1) Daemon Tools doesn't support x64 yet (big - IMHO)
2) VERY shoody driver support in the peripheral area (monitors, keyboards, etc). Found this out the hard way when I went to use my digital camera and MP3 player...
3) Poor Antivirus/Firewall application support. You're only option for antivirus software ATM is Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 10.
4) Some 32 bit programs refuse to run.
5) Poor selection of true 64-bit programs. It'll take some time before we see major 64-bit programs (Office, Photoshop, etc...) available for mass consumption. The 32 bit versions work fine, but 64 bit would be very nice to have.
My $0.02...;)
WOW :) thats some good information thx. i got the win xp64 trial kit downloaded last night so i will be installing it tonight after dinner. i hope this is worth it.....
thx guys. perc

I've had the evaluation copy installed on a seperate partition in dual boot for a couple of months now on my work rig DFI NF4 X2 (see sig) it came with all the necessary drivers, only had to download the nvidia video drivers.
I've not had any problems with it, alot of 32bit programs wont work with it though.

I've been dual booting with 32 and x64 Edition since the trial came out and it does have a nice feel. There is a lot of info at www.planetamd64.com for those that care.
Downloaded the latest Prime95 version for 64 (P64v2414) and ran it on my Winchester 3500+, LP Ultra-D, with Mushkin PC2500 Black Level II at 257x10 last night. Didn't make 24 hours but good enough for me.

typical benches are almost identical to 32bit but the rig idles a couple degrees cooler in x64. It does need just a slight voltage bump to complete Priming compared to 32 bit. Hell, a free trial is hard to turn down. You may like it as well.
The 64bit ATI drivers have been painful to install and those with VIVO cards will be frustrated cause of WDM difficulty. BUt the latest x64 5.9s now offer a WDM download and everything was a breeze to set up on x800 type cards.
@ KoHan69 -what vid card and drivers were you using?
