From the always accurate Inquirer  , so believe at your own risk:

I don't think this is going to be the approach, Intel had indicated to HP that they would continue to use the mentioned technology in the development of the Itanium line as that's where the bread and butter is for HP (in their Superdome series, Itanium based stuff).
I think they are going back to the technology lessons gleaned from the team that originally taped out the Dothan and predicting power useage going forward based on their ability to shrink core sizes with new tech.
Translation to X86 just doesn't make sense at this point to me. Making that work for a single proc was hard (look at Transmeta) can you imagine scaling this up to a four core per chip solution? I somehow think that might be the distant future...

Can you digg (http://digg.com/hardware/The_hidden_currents_powering_Intel_s_next_gen_chip s_) it?

no...what's that got to do with anything?

That artical was beyond retarded. The author has no idea whats going on and is just throwing buzzwords out there.

What a load of rubbish
the only thing intel have done in the last two years is copy AMD and use any other tech they can find from outside intel
intel = intellectually bankrupt, though I really hope they get their act together soon

I disagree, I honestly believe Intel has better tech than AMD, it's a matter of seeing them implement it. I use AMD processors, but watching those Dothans reminds me that clock for clock Intel builds a faster CPU.
AMD will continue to strive for product differentiation and will do quite well, I will likely continue buying their stuff.

UnG though how do u see Intel not making Yonah 64bit compatible a good decision?

Well, it's really a case of what makes sense right now. I have all these 64 bit chips here, but my desktop and my laptop don't use nor require 64 bit addressing. Neither do the apps I use and I use a lot of apps!!! My Unix boxes are running 64 bit, but they run mega databases....
Yonah is a portable chip, needs to be low voltage with as few transistors as possible. Fewer power sucking features means longer battery life at higher 32 bit clocks...remember, this chip is for laptops and being designed for laptops.
Gartner research indicates less than half a per cent of fortune 500 companies intend to move towards 64 bit OS PC's in the next THREE years...and corporate america is where these things sell...
And I admit myself, do I want EMT 64 or do I want a faster 32 bit chip with longer battery life in my laptop?....guess what I pick...

I must agree with the 64bit usage, I use as per my sig but still only use XP 32bit ATM

Please take the AMD phanboy stuff elsewhere, like into the AMD forum.

Nothing to do with "phanboy" stuff, that is my point of view at this time as it is with many many ppl that I am in contact with
I use both intel and AMD high end systems though the intel is now 2 years old as there is nothing available from intel that would match/improve what I already have, that is a fact, not "phanboy" stuff that intel fanboys like you complain about :)

I'm no fanboy; I am agnostic on platform, and would use a bin laden chip if it was the best. I'm just someone who doesn't want your off-topic rants in my thread (already reported to moderators). So typical of the AMD crowd to come into an Intel thread and crap on it.

"Your Thread", oh so sorry, to be honest I did not even know it was in the intel forumn
Stop whining and contribute to the "subject", which in actual fact was/is just a RANT from an unreliable rag ;)

Why do people always assume Dothan is faster clock for clock? Are gaming benchmarks all you go by? Dothan has 1FP unit, and an inferior SSE2 implementation.
The only thing Dothan is faster than the K8 at is gaming, and this is particularly due to it's large, low latency L2 cache.
Everything else, K8 whoops Dothan's ass.
Now Yonah will probably be a different beast altogether. I expect Yonah to be noticeably faster than the present K8 in both gaming, and multimedia apps..
AMD is expected to come out with an F revision next year though, and they'll probably throw a few enhancements in to make the K8 faster clock for clock..

You have to remember that Dothan is also great if all you do is bench with SuperPi
I cant wait to see the 2nd revision of Conroe (I try not to buy first revision, anyone remember the 1st P4, Willamette [sp?] I bought one, OHHH what a POS :( ) but thats about all I can see in the furure for intel ATM

Actually I was referring to synthetic business app bench marks. I don't game at all. The chip was designed for a laptop for business users. At what it does it is the best in the business. There's no assumption on my part, it's just a quiet truth. Clock for clock it's the better chip. Does it outshine the K8 everywhere? No, of course not. Does it outshine a K8 in the areas for which it was intended for use? Certainly.
My original opinion as to the capability of Intel engineering stands. They have some excellent technology, it's just a matter of getting their heads around putting the right stuff on the right chip. Something they have failed at recently.

I am semi-biased aganist intel but after what the Dothan have done all i can say is WOW. My next machine will probably be AMD just because I don't have the money to build a benching machine but I sure as hell would if I had the money. But the Author is an IDIOT. He is just throwing words together. Inquirer should have there logo be Believe at your own Risk.

He he well spoken live2game2003, the problem arises when some ppl even here at XS believe this drivel and try and use it to stir up more intel propoganda
Re. your statements Ugly n Grey about the Dothan being the BEST at what it was designed for, the notebook, then IMHO you are 100% right, I dont think it has ANY real competition :)
