I have been debating getting a dothan for a while now and I decided you only live once :slap:  :)

It is going to be a gamer/server for all of my media. I started setting it up last night and after having heart failure because the system would not show up on the new Dell 2005 monitor, I realized one of the memory retention clips was lodged behind my 6800gt so it would not go in flush. Ahhh. Fixed. Booted it up and it seems to run fine. I have some Gskill (2x512) coming from Newegg today, so last night I only had a single stick of 256. FIsrt of all, I flashed the newest beta bios and all things are a go. I am starting to wonder if my mobo has a problem. Anything over 205 fsb, instant restart. Hmmm. So if I try it tonight and it still does it, I think I might rma the board. Here are the specs.

Asus p4p800se
Pentium M 740 533fsb
ct-479
Stock HSF
Nvidia 6800gt(x800xt as well)
Hitachi 80gb Sata2
MAxtor 16 mb Cache 300 gb

It would prime for a couple hours at 2587 @ 1.39 volts, but would hit a wall from the fsb I suspect. I am kind of disappointed. I was hoping for a lot more. The performance at that speed with single channel ram was still surprisingly good though. I am still going to keep the San Diego system, but I was hoping this pc would be a lot faster so I could move it in to my theater. The A64 system is fine, but faster is always better, right?
:fact:

Anyways, maybe you guys could tell me what the dealio is? Is it a bum motherboard or a bum chip? Winner gets a stale donut!!

It is a new P M 740 from ewiz. Co or better. I suppose.
In cpuz, it says, stepping 8.

could be worth checking on temps ....
and increasing the core voltage alittle more ...
ie 1.5 and then try for more

but these cpus do max out at about 2.6> 2.8 gig on air
but with a stock cooler, u might have reached ur max already :(

It's a C0 since 533

Ok, you say it reboots when you go greater than 205? So I'm assuming you're using Clockgen or SetFSB or sumfing, in that case, what are you booting at, you need to boot at >200FSB to get the agp/pci locks to work.

I was booting @ 201x12 and CGing up to that speed(2587). I just find it really hard to believe it is prime stable @ 2587, but reboots @ 2613. I have the jumpers on the ct479 @ the 533 spot. It is like the mobo does not like anything over 2600 at all. How do I disable PAT in the bios? I have revision 4 of the latest bios from Asus. The mobo after further review will do 216 fsb at least. My temps are a little high. 55 c under prime torture when @ 1.4 volts. (2587mhz) I will throw in the memory tonight. Should I pull the jumpers? I have never used the p4p800se before or an intel board for that matter.... I bet I have a settting in the bios wrong. Turbo is off. Spread spectrum is off. Everything on manual. memory is @ 266 divider. I can put it all the way up to 533 though according to the bios. Help....

Oh yeah for the pci selection, I think there are 3 choices, normal, 33,66 and like 72 or something. I have it on 33, 66. It feels like the pci locks are not working. WHat could cause that? Should I have it set on normal?

lower the multi ....
and up the fsb

Boot at 201mhz, this board limits your overclock when PAT is enabled regardless of the multiplier. I just use the adaptor with all the jumpers removed. I think it defaults to 400fsb but it doesn't really matter what jumper I use.

I hate the PAT problem at this board. It doesn't affect me when I use the 13* mp so I suspect that it starts to limit an overclock at 220mhz fsb or higher.

I was wondering how much the PCI lock really affects the system . I`ve seen guys running fine at 240fsb at P4GD1 without it . I`m saying that cause they have 750, 760 chips and it is impossible to boot at those crazy clocks, besides the fact that P4GD1 does not have multi available.

OK, so do you think it is the mobo that is the problem? What bios are you guys using?
I would appreciate knowing what settings others have found successful in their bios. I figured booting @ 201 would help, It didn't. The best overclocking I have got so far has been using the mobos built-in 30% overclock and then raisng with clockgen once in windows. It must turn off PAT that way. Who knows?

It has nothing to do with the board not being able to lock the PCI frequency with PAT enabled. 10*265mhz is the max with PAT but witout I can prime at 10*286mhz. With the 11* mp I can do 11*241mhz with PAT enabled and 11*260mhz prime95 stable with it disabled. Somehow the board is limiting the overclock but it doesn't has anything to do with the busspeed but only with the total overclock it seems. With PAT disabled I can bench at an unbelievable 9*320mhz at stock aair with PAT disabled so this board isn't shabby at all. It's not the cpu because i have tested 5 Dothans all hitting a wall at 11*241 with PAT enabled. There is no difference between setting PAT at standard, turbo or auto.

I'm using the 1009.004 beta bios now but I'm too lazy to flash it to something else. I might try the P4C800-E Deluxe and see how it goes or the 1008 final P4P800 SE bios.

i also have a 740 (on p4c800ed) and game all day at 2574 mhz but at 2613 it reboots. with chilled water (only 12C because of the humidity) i could get a ss at 2626 but was still only stable to 2587 mhz. such an odd wall to hit, it almost seems like there is some kind of lock/fsb/adaptor problem.

Well I put some new Geil value memory in that overclocks pretty well. I was able to do 217x12 at 2,3,3,6 timings and pop out a 28 second superpi non-tweaked. This system will be on 24/7 and I don't want to roast it so I think around 2.6 for 24/7 is good. It will be mostly a server anyways. It is already faster in some benches than the San Diego, but a lot slower in others. I could probably squeeze out a 100 mhz with better cooling. When I first started the machine in a cold room, it would go all the way to 2670 for a screen shot. I am running 1.44 volts all of the time now. Under load, 1.5 volts or more jumps over 60c under load. That is a little hot for it. My 6800gt is really freaking me out though. I downloaded and installed the latest 77.77 drivers and it is artifacting in BF2 like CRAZY. I am not sure what the deal is but the card says it is at 74c under load. 64c is idle. WHat the hell is goinig on? I underclocked it and it helped but not very much. I also noticed that no other game acted this way. Are the new drivers bad???

yes in high quality mode..
