Usually it overclocks like hell , besides the unlocked multi . They are special chips for engineering tests .

imho, no difference in new 840 EE, they stock are with unlocked multi and imho no difference in o/c,
just different markings on heatspreater plate ;)

no difference. if u think it's illegal to own, but you think it legal to sell them on eBay for public? :D

Every ES is made with a certain purpose, for example testing if the technology is capable of a certain speed. ES's can overclock worse, as good or better than the normal cpu.

I didn`t know about that . From what i have seen the ES clocks much higher than regular CPUs ....but maybe it is just luck in picking the good ones . ;)

Really?!!??!?!?!?!?! Theres a law that says you cant own an ES?

Anyway i think you should replace illegal with rare.

This is correct. So unless you know exactly what it was made for then you are taking a bigger gamble than buying a retail chip. The thing about ES chips is unless you were involved in the project that used that specific chip you never know what you will get. The one I have has only 18 and 14 multis, can run 100% stable at less than 1 volt and is a D0 stepping. Anyone wanna guess what it was used to test?

I think "illegal" is probably technicaly correct, the es cpu's are actually owned by Intel and are definitley not supposed to be sold by the companies, individuals, ect. that are using them for testing. As to "rare".... I don't think so ;)

Do you really think there has to be a law that "says" it's illegal to own one? Laws are a little more general than that... they don't have to say it's illegal to speed at a certain mph... just speeding in general..

I doubt all ES are owned by Intel. Theres probably many companies that simply buy them because of their large size and need for test equipment.
