The program runs constantly with 100% CPU useage, but the catch is that it only uses the remaining available parts of the CPU any other program or resource is NOT using...
even being @ 100% load 100% of the time you will NEVER ''feel'' the program running becuase it is not in conflict with anything - It takes only the CPU cycles it can and doesn't try to use more...
as far as the required internet connection .. that is only a brief connection direct to stanford to upload and download the files needed to be ''folded''
it can cause problems with games however :-(

First off, I have tried to answer all basic questions Here (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=664). So if we fail to help yea out, then check out that thread, there are tons of links in there with info.
Now, it is a program that you install. It runs in the background taking up all your unused CPU cycles.
i.e. If you run it, and you are doing nothing, it takes all 100% of the cycles. If you get on, and start a game or program that wants to use say 50% of the CPU cycles, F@H will allow the game/program to take them. So you would still be running 100% CPU usage. F@H takes a step back to any other program.
If you look in that thread I linked too, it has a link in there that points to a site that tested (i.e. benchmarked) a system and compared it to having F@H running and to one without it. The benchmark results were so minimal in difference it was barely even noticable. (Not by eye, but by points in the benching. Say, 3DMark, w/o F@H running, it was 13000, with F@H Running, it would have been 12999.99. Very minimal difference.)
If you need any help please ask there are tons of folks here that would be willing to answer for yea.

ok, i checked out your startup guide but i ran into a small problem setting it up in scheduled task. there is a problem with the username and password settings. no matter what i do i cant get it to run in my scheduled tasks, i do have it running now and it starts up when i restart my computer. is this gonna be a problem?
also, i went to the user rankings site and tried to find my name and it wasnt there yet. how long will it take before i show up there?
last but not least, i put the extreme folding tag in my sig but ive noticed another "stats"type sig too, how can i get that in my sig?
Im not to sure about the task manager thing, Ill send Tweaked! a PM and send him this way to help yea with that.
As far as the liquidninjas (blue) sig there its in there too. But it will more then likely not function correctly until a WU has been turned in.
Now as for how long, that varies on what WU (work Unit) you get, the speed of your system etc... a few variables. More then likely, you should start to get a few points within a day or two.

ok, cool. i went to look for my name and couldnt find it so i was wondering if it was working right, hopefully it is. ill check again tomarrow. right now my first wu is at 19/400, 4 percent. i take it ill have to wait till the first one is done right?
Pretty much yea. Be ready for it to take a little time for the website to update. Sometimes it can be a little slow. It'll get up there, but might take a lil time.
If Your really interested in seeing if youve been posted up a WU, then go to the home page, do a user search, and search for your name and it should give it up.
BTW, Welcome to Team Xtreme!~!
