I've been looking at a few 20 lcds for a while and none of them seem to fit the bill for what i use my computer for, gaming and photoshop.
So i've been looking at a few 21" crts
samsung - 1100DF
viewsonic - G220FB
nec/mitsubishi - ACCUSYNC 120
One thing ive heard people say is that some are not really flat but slightly convex, any truth to this?
of the 3 brands which one of 21" monitors would u recomend?
go with a high quality LCD man youll thank me in the long run....check the LCD guide out

While im not a pro photographer i would like the lcd to have accurate colors, i didnt think this was possible with an lcd.
Although i could use my 2 year old crt for the picture and put the tools on the lcd.

LCDs are good for photo work or anything without movement because every pixel is an exact point. This will always bring higher quality then a gun firing "randomly" at a sceen. CRTs work really hard to focus the guns, but they never can be as perfect as an LCD, which is why you have settings like convergiance, geometry, landing and moire.
Now for anything with alot of full screen refreshes (Games or movies) a LCD will blur alot, even those special 12 or whatever millisecond ones blur.
I would either use a Sony GDM-F520 or a Apples 30 inch monitor. If both were the same price I would be using the Apple one, I was able to get a used F520 for under 500$ though.

So the reason alot of photoshop gurus still use crts is because of color accuracy and contrast?
I would love to get an lcd but the current ones dont seem to be great at both games and editing.

LCDs above 19" wont be that perfect in gaming, but will run really good at it.
You will only experiecen a bit of motion blur if you buy a fast 20" pannel like the Dell 2005fpw (Which is a S-IPS pannel overrided from 16ms to 12ms)
The monitor is a wide screen LCD (16:10), so it will give you an advantage with games that support wide aspect ratios (like the Source engine)
Photoshop gurus would always get a LCD if they have the money.
CRTs are a bit blurry and lose focus and perfect geometry as you look away from the center.
I recommend you take a visit to the LCD Guide :toast: (Click the link on my signature below)
and take a look at the Dell 2005fpw if you want something above 19" that can run games properly.
Check the linked reviews on the guide. They will say that the LCD only ghosts a bit.
It also runs really cheap at 520, and you can add the coupon code from here to make it even ceahper:
http://www.slickdeals.net/category/d-g/
Afther the coupon, tax, and shipping, the total is $500 wich is the price for a top-notch 21" CRT (wich is really about 20" viewable).
You also get 2% with one of those special Dell accounts and if you are lucky enough to get another coupon for it, it can be even cheaper

PVA is better in image quality and viewing angles, but most of them are slower than I-IPS and TN pannels.
The newer P-MVA (P standing for Premium) VA pannels are more capable of achieving faster and more stable response times without sacrificing too much image quality.
The only pannel using this tech is the ViewSonic VP191B made by AU Obtronics.
AU Obtronics also has another pannel under their sleeve, this time a P-MVA 23" LCD
Its like a oversized VP191B, but I havent seen any LCDs with it yet.
I want to change my CRT as soon as possible
My FE991sb gets my eyes tired and the image becomes a bit more blury when you go to 1600x1200 resolutions. I also would like to have widescreen for my PC :D

so the 20 viewsonic doesnt use a p mva panel like the 19 inch? I was looking at that or the dell.

No, its a S-IPS LG Phillips pannel rated at 16ms, same as the Dell 2005fpw.
Since its about the same, I would recommend the Dell 2005fpw because its a wide screen and the Viewsonic VP201 is a bit pricey.

Im leaning heavily towards the ViewSonic VP191B, it seems to come the closest to everything i need. if i purchase this one it will be my first lcd, just worried i will be dissapointed and out $425.

You wont.
The image will look sharper, richer in colors, and will be more faster and stable than most LCDs out there.
You wont notice any ghosting or motion blur, and since its a LCD, the image will look a lot more crisp than your NEC 17" CRT. The only disadvantage is that you wont go over 1280x1024, but it still is a nice resolution for gaming.
Not being able to run 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF will give you more power to run 1280x1024 with 6xAA and 16xAF and will still look good.
You take the resolution, but you get the AA, so it levels out nicely ;)
Trust me that when you have a image as sharp as that of a VP191b, you better have some good AA rendering, or those jags will poke you in the eye :D

Yah i came to that conclusion while looking at the 20" lcds and thinking of how much graphical power i would need to run it with max out settings and at a high res. At first i didnt think the res of a 19 was enough now im sure it will be.
