View Full Version : Watercooling for 6800GT?

In my new Dothan rig, I am getting an nVidia 6800GT (It will mainly be used for Linux gaming, and probably a little bit of Winborks gaming so I can test out F.E.A.R). I am thinking about watercooling it too, can anybody point me in the right direction for w/c equipment? I haven't played the watercooling game for a while, and need recommendations.

Are you going to be cooling just the card or the CPU too?
Either way the card will benefit greatly form WC. I seem to gain more with water on my GPUS than I ever do with my CPUs...

Card only, I have more Xtreme ideas up my sleeve for the Dothan.

Well currently I am using using a low profile Maze 4 on my 6800 GT. Seems to be good so far. Just need to shave a little off two of your ramsinks for it to fit.

Is the DD NV-68 block any good?

No.
Too restrictive and you don't need to watercool the RAM.
Maze4 & copper ramsinks with a fan over them will give better performance for a lot cheaper.

not to mention the Maze4 will be compatible with future cards (well at least it is more likely that it will be) AND there is less heat added to your loop so you could cool more chips with the same rad...

Yeah, get the maze 4. If you need a rad too get either a BIP2 or a BIX1, the BIP2 would be the better option if you are wanting quieter fans.

Ok, block chosen. What about pump? I was looking at some Eheim pumps, are they any good?

Get a DC pump, much less hassle. Pick up a Danger Den DDC/Swiftech mcp-350 for around $70 or a D-Tek Mag for around $50.
For just the gpu the Mag will be plenty of pump and small/silent. The mag can also be fitted with 3/8" or 1/2" barbs, whereas the other is only 3/8". Here are some links:

^what he said
If your just cooling the gpu, I wouldn't get a Eheim.

mcp 350 sounds good to me :)
good luck with that GT... and the dothan :D:
make sure you pick up a set of ramsinks.. the copper ones from OCZ are supposed to be good

The Mag is cheaper and plenty of pump for just a gpu loop, no need to spend the extra cash on the mcp-350, plus its only 3/8". Also, there have been a few cases of mcp-350's with a firmware glitch where they don't always start up :(

Ok, my specs so far:
Pump: DangerDen CSP-MAG
Block: DangerDen Lo-Pro Maze4 GPU
What about radiator? Preferably something which will fit 3 120mm fans.

You don't need a triple rad for just the vid card, but if you must then the BIP3 is $45 at dangerden.com
Really the BIP2 or BIX2 will be plenty.

actually, you'd probably need no more than a BIP or BIX, but as they're so cheap these days, upgrading to a BIP/X 2 is hardly any more money.

On a 6800, does the Maze 4 have to be mounted with the barbs coming out towards the side panel, or can it be rotated 90 degrees so they point towards the front of the case? I don't like the tight bends you have to make in 1/2" tubing when it comes out towards the side panel.

well the mount holes around the gpu are all equally spaced so i spose you could as long as the mem sinks fit under and it doesnt foul anything obvious

Well, there is memory under the barbs no matter which direction you point it, so I'd rather not have the tubes coming out towards the side panel. Only problem is when you are going between cpu and gpu, the run would have to be longer going around the end of the card rather than the side.

Either way there will still be a bend. I think the way your saying would be 2 bends though

Same number of bends really, just not as tight since you aren't constricted by the side panel. Plus, one line will be coming from my front mounted radiator to the gpu block, so easier routing I think.

Hmm, OCZ bgasinks seem quite low profile, I am sure they could fit under the barbs.

Here are the OCZ BGA Copper Ramsinks on a 6800GT, I had to remove a little material on 2 of the Ramsinks so they would clear the tygon tubing.

Yes, its the low profile Acetal MAZE4.

With the regular Maze4, not the low profile, are the barbs up a little higher away from the card?
Look this, russian guide :) Good pics included...

cart, with the regular block the barbs are higher up from the card so u wont have to take off as much of the ramsink.

Good to hear, I have a single AGP 6800, no SLI here :(
