View Full Version : Choosing the Right Memory

I'm planning to purchase parts to build a new system and thus far have the CPU, GPU, PSU, and MOBO picked out which are some of the most essential components, the last major choice to me atleast seems to be the memory and its one of the most important as it seems. I've got a couple of brands and ect...picked out and wanted advice on your opinions for the overclockabilty of this memory so my system won't be bottlenecked down. I've got no problems w/ any brand that will or should work well in such a setup but price is the only downer here mainly anything in the $225 - $250 or so price range too bad since as is I won't be able to go Crucial and get the 2 x 1GB like I had originally wanted hopefully it won't be a problem until the next time I upgrade.

So far system is:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D
OCZ ATX 520W PSU
XFX 7800GTX (btw, great deals on the CPUs w/ the XFX bundle 3200 is $140)

I had jotted down a couple of memory models that seemed promising.
OCZ EL DDR PC-4800 1GB (2 x 512MB) Platinum Elite Edition according to OCZ its Samsung TCCD
and
mushkin Redline XP4000 1GB (2 x 512MB) Windound UTT or something of the like I think

Btw, if anyone knows where can I get the OCZ? I have no idea how much it is since all I have to go on is there website which doesn't sell directly. :stick:

If you want to hit some high HTT then PC4800 Elite and if you want some tight timings w/ benchies and gaming then Mushkin Redline XP4000

Well, benchies i'm not worried about but I just wanna hit some high HTT and do alot of gaming since thats all this setup will be used for. ;) Although i'm not doing something extreme with the cooling like LN2 or the like it'll probably be air cooled now and water alittle later. If one memory can be used with decent success for those purposes i'd be happy to hear of it. Thanks.

I can say what I'd choose if I had to buy it now :)

TCCDs (high htt, usually can do 2.5-3-3-6 timings 1T )

1. Gskill 4800FF but price is ~$300
2. Gskill 4400LE

UTT (low timings, 2-2-2-x)
Mushkin redline XP4000

P.S. I am not a big fan of high voltage/low timings and I'd use such memory only for benching.

Actually on Newegg the 4800 is $235 if this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231015) is what you mean. If thats it, then i'll get it when I order my system, thanks Kiwi.

For good timings, speed and price, the redline is very tempting.

Everyone seems to be forgetting about G.Skil GH for Low latency timings. It's at the Egg for under $150. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231013) and from what I've seen, it's performance is just as good as the redlines.... ;)

can't go wrong with either one of these suggested above :)
