:nono: 9800pro sucks. Hey, I recently purchased and 9800pro AIW from FS. Everything is so far great except BF2. When I play BF2 and fly an airplane, some textures keep disapearing and reapearing and most of the textures go black.

My System Specs:
2.53 GHz Intel p4 512 k
80 GB HD
1 GB DDR RAM
BBA 9800pro AIW
AGP 4x
250 WATT PSU
My PC SUCKS

I tried changing the settings but I can't find the right settings to make it go away. Right now I am playing the game a 800x600 resoloution and when I switch to 1024x768 the same thing happens. Can somebody please help me find the right settings and fix this problem! I am playing the demo BTW and I have the latest drivers and my card isn't overclocked!

sounds like either a driver issue, or the memory is heating up too much.

try those things first.

I found using the Omega 2.6.53's got rid of all that for me. I was using the 2.6.43's before and I was getting alot of black textures, The new ones got rid of it all.

dont use it at too high of a rez...lol you gotta take it down to like 800x600 at that with a little speed boost mine runs it ok

Yeah, I run 800x600 with High/Med mix and it runs fine. FRAPS usually gives me 50-80FPS.

WRONG

here are my settings
TerrainQuality 1
GeometryQuality 2
LightingQuality 2
DynamicLightingQuality 2
DynamicShadowsQuality 0
EffectsQuality 2
TextureQuality 2
TextureFilteringQuality 1
Resolution 1024x768@75Hz
Antialiasing 4x
draw at 100
i get around 30-60 fps and the game looks decent, get the cat 5.7 omega drivers

To get one thing clear, the 9700pro and the 9800pro runs hot as hell on stock cooling ( except The High tech edition). The memory on these two cards runs REALLY HOT, you can see that if you try to raise the speed on it, the gpu you can twist, but the memory is really hard to get anywhere. I had lots of artifacts and texture corruption with stock cooling in demanding games , and when i try to touch the card after, i nearly couldn't hold my fingers on the memory. Then i bought the Zalman with the optional air cooler, and cooled the memory too, i have never seen an artifact since or texture corruption, and the card is almost cold after when you touch it, what a difference. To me, it sounds as you are having the same trouble as i had once, before i made the brillant choice of getting a Zalman. But the bottom line on these two cards is, they run hot on stock cooling , and easely gets artifacts and corruption if you dont get a better cooling solution, so get one and all your troubles will be gone, i promise.

On another note, 250 watt PSU, that's not much for that rig. Maybe there's a power issue too.

did you have the same problem I have...the textures are not showing? How much and where could I find the ZALMAN air cooler in Vancouver, Canada.

I've linked to a site with the "Zalman ZM80C-HP Heatpipe VGA Cooler + ZM OP1" so you can get a look at it , but just to make it clear, it's not just a air cooler, it comes with two plates which are to be mounted on both sides of the card connected with a heatpipe. the aircooler is optional, so remeber to order that too. And get the blocks for the ram too, i dont think it's in the packet, so remember them too.

Edit : i've linked you to another newer Zalman product too, i haven't tried this my self, but all i hear is , it's just as good as the "Zalman ZM80C-HP Heatpipe VGA Cooler + ZM OP1 " so it's your choice, but either way, it's so much better than the stock cooling.

Maybe you got a HIS (hightech) edition, or you have a good cooling solution in your case, good airflow. You need someone to blow on the hot soup, so you can eat it.

What's the point of spending another $60-$70 on cooling? Should I just return the card to FS and buy a BFG 6600GT OC? Would there be the same problem?

That's entirely up to you, but the money spend on this solution goes for all cards, they both fit almost all cards on the market, so it's more an invesment than just something for your 9800pro.

put a fan next to it.. if it clears up then its heat related.

if it doesnt its probably your tiny PSU.

i have an ati brand, is that good clocks for a 9800?

Not really, The memory ok, course they are hard to clock on the 9800pro and the 9700pro. But your core could do much better.

Here's a comparison to my 9700pro

9700pro factory 325/310 could get it to 340/320 with stock cooling
After i bought the Zalman i could do 405/340 this means i gained 65mhz on the core and 20 on the ram from the better cooling, and it was on the silent setting (5v) for the aircooler. I could touch the plates after, and they were not hot.

Your's comes with 380/340
So you should do atleast 455 on the core,( again the momery is hard to gain anything from on these two cards), with a better cooling solution.

you'd have the same problem with a 6600gt, your processor and memory setup will be causing a bottleneck due to running on the 133 bus, oh yeah BF2 is buggy as hell so make sure you update regularly

if as you say, all the other games are fine this wouldnt lead me to believe its a heat issue, whoever said 9800's run hot obviously hasnt touched a 6800, my 9800pro is on stock cooling clocks to 480/780 and the temp never goes over 50*c load (accuratly measured by thermal probe, i have as5'ed it but thats it - the ram runs close to 55*c full load, but i wouldnt call this hot, my gf2 gts used to run mid 50's back in the day

This is definatly a BIG ATI problem, I have it on my x850xt and it has a NV silencer and never runs above 50C. I run the card at stock clock even though it can go much higher, I still get black textures + 1 min freeze at the start of everygame due to gpu craziness and lots of crashes. Its the only game that does it and latest patch made it worse.

Should I just add another fan to my comp. and then place it right next to the video card? Would that solve to cooling?

It's a way yes, it would help. But let it blow over and under the card from the side , if u can place it in the side panel of your case. And make sure there's a good airflow from the front and out the back, to get rit of the warm air.

I have tried 5.5 5.6 and 5.7 drivers, the black texture problem wasnt in the demo but the 1 minute freeze that happends once everytime you start bf2 did.
