View Full Version : Which is better overclocking memory, VX or Redline? DDR500

Here is my system, that will exist in a day or so:
Athlon64 4400+ Toledo + Zalman 7700cu
DFI Lanparty SLI-DR
BFG 7800gtx OC
Tagan TG480-U22
Thermaltake Tsunami
Hitachi T7K250
...notice no memory. At first I ordered the OCZ PC4000 VX. People told me the Mushkin Redline is better, so i ordered it planning on returning the VX unopened. Now people are telling me the VX is better again!
In most cases the Redline seems to overclock higher, and both have very good timings. But here are a few things about timings...
While many can get the Redline to a CAS of 1.5, Athlon CPUs cannot utilize a CAS of 1.5, it is not supported by the memory controller.
The Redline can get a tRAS of 5, and the OCZ struggles for this. The way the memory works though, a tRAS less than the sum of CAS+tRCD+2, since 2+2+2=6, a tRAS timing of less than 6 is usually in fact WORSE than a tRAS of 5.
I plan to overclock as high as possible, with tons of bandwidth.
Which memory should I keep? I have to return one.

Return OCZ Vx. Mushkin Redline is much better. ;)

So I keep hearing, but I'd like to hear like 100000 opinions but I don't think that is going to happen by the time I get off work...
Sure enough I'll go home and whatever is the consensus however you spell it by then ill just build it
you guys dont know what having a 4400+ and a 7800gtx sit right next to your bed for 3 days feels like...
EDIT and the fact that this opinion may very well be the first one i have seen from someone that owns neither one means a lot...
EDIT2 that sounded sarcastic but seriously, im just saying that the opinion seems to matter more when you arent already attached to one brand because it just happened to be what you bought

Who knows, its really a luck of the draw thing if you get lucky with either you'll have fast ram. The only way to know is to test them throw in the VX when it gets here and see if hits 260+ otherwise consider selling them and buying the redline.

i already have both... and i really dont want to test out what will become someone else's memory.

you have both with you available to test? if so jsut test them lol and sell the kit which performs worst

i will be returning one set
unopened
i suppose i could open then just repackage and make it look like it is unopened, but it would be a lot to go through and again i dont want to mess with someone elses memory
EDIT and to test the max on the memory would i just set the mulitplier to the minimum and the HTT to the minimum and see how high i can raise the FSB?
Korpse

same difference
test both kits, and return the one which doesnt perform the best, whats so difficult to understand? its a win win situation :p:
but if ur set on keeping 1 kit and sending 1 back unopened, KEEP the redline :p:
ps - ur far to kind....sending ur ram back untested cos it mite be someonelese is STUPID, you dont evne know if an overclocker would be getting your returned set.

it just seems like a lot to go through and kind of wrong
you have redline, is there anythign that stopped you from getting 5 sets of redline and 5 sets of OCZ just to see which is best?

i havent got my redline or vx yet, both still coming from america - but from what ive seen...Redline owns VX, you see more 265s 270s with redline than you do with VX
and what stopped me getting 5 sets of both is money :p: and the fact ive already had about 12kits of UTT :)

well 2 sets then and returning one
the point is i dont want to be doing anything like that
i would if it were less expensive and not computer parts
so redline it is then, right? it seems that if it is the same as the VX pretty much but newer the answer is obvious
can someone answer the large texted question, how do i find the memory max, just set HTT low and multi low and raise the FSB?
Korpse

depends on u cpu - i believe the 4400 runs a stock 11x multi?
if so set the Multi to 8 or 9, and set the HTT without dividers - this way only ur ram is gettings stressed and your CPU isnt.
eg trying to see if 250mhz 2-2-2-5 is stable.....set multi to 8 and HTT without dividers to 250 - then ur ram is at 250mhz and ur cpu is only at 2250mhz :)

nah i meant like the HTTx4, x5, etc
i set that to what?
would it not make more sense to set the multi as low as possible just to make sure the CPU has nothing to do with it?
it damn well better run stable at 250/2-2-2-5, its supposed to.... i meant more like 260+

set the htt link to 1 below what it is at stock, thats what i do
cos its 4x200=800 but cos its at 260, 4x260 messes up so i set it at 3 (3x260)
but this is for a DFI UT nf3 so dont know if it wud be the same for your nf4 :p:

right but why not set to 2 just to make sure?
ill figure it out i guess

I see no point why having 2 the same threads opened, even in different sections. I think that 1 topic regarding your question is more than sufficient.
You might find lots of information in the Xtreme Bandwith section, and therefore, I'll be closing this topic so that further questions, remarks, opinions can be continued in the other topic.
