Partitions are what you are looking for my friend. There are programs to partition your HDD without reformatting but those cost money and the best way to do it would be just to reformat and do a clean install anyway. You can use the fdisk utility found on any windows bootable cd or floppy disc.

Vista is a giant dissapointment. What happened to all the goodies they promised us!? This isn't the Longhorn we saw a while back, they stopped developing that and built this one from a Win2k3 SP1 base, horrific. So, technically, we are using a dressed up WinNT. Nasty! What happened to our "brand-new technically amazing" new version of Windows? Well, looks like Micro:banana::banana::banana::banana: scrapped it and put this WinNT abomination in it's place. Good job Microsoft, you :banana::banana::banana:ed up again! :toast:

You need a MSDN subscription to download it legally, of course there is always P2P networks or BitTorrent.

Sarcasm detected :P
Longhorn wasn't looking too bad a while back, when they were working on all of these great new features, but they threw away all of that effort and turned it into an "enhanced" version of NT yet again.

They are working on "security" first, the enhancements are still being built, some will be released, others will come out with the first service pack. Can't say much more, NDA's apply.
Linux distros are pretty crappy for the most part. I think the best Linux builds I've seen have been from guys who pick and choose their own build components. For enterprise I've had good luck with SuSE builds, but desktop builds all seem to be awful. Your mileage may vary.
It looks very pretty, seems to be working fine so far, I stuck it on a pair of Optys with a basic Ti4200 video card, 4 Gigs RAM, fibre channel card with it's own space on the SAN. So no idea about new hardware support. So far, not much difference from XP in terms of overall impressions. I do like the virtual folders though. It installed without a glitch whatsoever for me.
First thoughts;
Can't see anything that would make me upgrade and the digital rights management and squealing capabilities just make me wanna puke. Overall I think it needs some work, but that's why it's a beta.

But they still totally screwed it up. Originally, it was a non-NT system, but they started again using a Win2k3 base, that is TERRIBLE. Windows NT is horrific. And what do you have against the GNU/Linux system!? I've been using it for a long time, and I have no major complaints about it. Look at you "Mr. Oh I am such a knowledgable source of useless, deprecated and/or untrue info about the Unix/Linux world". I've used many distributions ranging from SuSE (enterprise level), to more "hardcore" distributions such as Gentoo. I've even succesfuly completed Linux-From-Scratch (with many of my own deviations to the book). There is nothing majorly wrong with GNU/Linux, maybe you are stuck in your own little commercial Unix world to realize it
Nothing against you, just my $0.02.

If you actually had to make a multi million dollar decision, you might do some research too. Keep it about the facts at hand and not about the people. Because you rave on about nothing, I've written you off as a fanboy. Either weigh all the facts or stay in your closet. Nothing against you at all, your opinions are welcome, they are just not backed up by the facts. Linux is not God, get over it.

Did I say Linux was ever God in my entire posting life here at XS? Nope. Did you ever say Linux was crap in your short, but sweet posting time here at XS? Yes, on a few occasions. I am not a Linux fanboy, merely a Linux supporter. And a BSD supporter, AND in fact, a Unix supporter too. Linux may not be as obscure or as "sophisticated" as your pathetic commercial Unix variants, which you babble on about oh so much, but it works, and it works great. All of this open-source software which you flame all too often (You claim MySQL is a big joke, when in fact, it is pretty good), is actually incredible. You can't say "Apache2 is a big worthless joke" without looking like a total retard. Do you think any of us care how expensive your Unix variants which you claim to use, are? Solaris, AIX, and all of these other Unix descendants which you probably worship, aren't bad at all, they are amazing, but do you think the average Unix desktop can afford a full blown commercial offering? No. That is yet another reason why I support free variants of BSD, and Linux. Not just from a technical standpoint. I don't worship Linux (or BSD) at all.

I am not fully informed about early Longhorn development, but iirc, it wasn't based on NT.

Actually a lot of Solaris can be had for nothing and has been available at various times for free download on x86. MySQL is a big joke compared to any commercial active DB. You like it? Great, you use it.
Yep, I like the commercial Unix distros. They work amazingly well for my primary purpose which is always database driven with a small side of high level encryption built built in.
I have Linux Distros running here at the house, they are OK, but no, not great. BSD is a much more organized and well put together package in my opinion.
The reason I call you a Linux worshipper is that on the OS threads you promote Linux over whatever is being offered, when in fact it's not all that hot. But you can't beat it for the price you say? What difference does that make to you? You already said you are not interested in paying for software, so all your stuff is free. That means you can have any flavour of Unix you like, any database you like guilt free...but you promote only one flavour...open source. Seems like a lopsided set of circumstances to me. You're as bad as the M$ giant you seem to hate so much.
There's always more than one answer and always more than one way of looking at technical solutions. Open source is not the only way.

The reason I support open source, the main reason, is because many of the applications are to my liking, yes, that's why. And, another reason, is because I learn alot reading source code, and occasionally write my own little modifications to adjust the applications even FURTHER to my liking. It's all opinion.

I have Vista with all of the work arounds if someone needs it.. I played with it for a few days but couldnt get any decent AV to work with a damn. So out it goes. It does feel like when it goes GOLD, ill actually buy a copy.
Ive got 2 legit copies of XP64 but the driver situation sucks, totally sucks. I need drivers for my Canon I860 and my soundcard.
