Read the first topic about longhorn. I added the registry key, I don't notice anything different in particular, but I welcome you all to try and test.

Hmmmm, thought my iTunes loaded somewhat faster....placebo effect I'm sure. Anyway, it did solve a problem....I've had this error message in Word for a few months now and it doesn't show up any more.

All tests were done on my old P4 3.06, not system in sig.

Rename .txt to .reg and apply it. (double click, click yes, click ok)

what exactly is it suppose to make faster? not sure I notice any diff at all, can we bench it and see the diff somewhere?

Do it means that the "EnablePrefetcher" key should be deleted and put "EnableSuperfetch" instead or just add "EnableSuperfetch" key without deleting "EnablePrefetcher" key? which is better?

Do not delete "EnablePrefetcher" key, just add the super fetcher. need.for.mhz did us all a service by just handing us the key. Thanks bro.

not much a diff i notice.... it does boot faster ..... but everything esle seems the same.... the booting speed can be gotten by setting the prefetcher to 5 too... hhmm...

r u guys getting a better result ?

I run SPi16 and 32M with:

(1) added Superfetch=1 with existing Prefetch=3
(2) Prefetch key deleted and added Superfetch=1

ZERO difference :(

Maybe it only speeds up certain type of functions. I guess it can't hurt.

Isnt the prefetch for making apps start faster and nothing else ?
If you check your prefetch folder you well see "shortcuts" to apps you have been running.

This is a new tweak that I have never heard of, but just like every single other registry tweak you most likely will not benefit from it. If it really did speed up Windows don't you think it would already be enabled?

Of course even if it doesn't do anything for performance a bunch of people will have no idea what they are talking about and swear they noticed a huge performance improvement and it will be posted all over the net. Kind of reminds me of IRQ8Priority.

I'm moving this thread to Operating Systems. We have three threads on that subject already so some cleaning is needed ;)

On this precise topic bachus? I don't think so.

It used to be 3 threads, all created within the past two days. Two in Operating Systems and one in the News. I combined two of them so now there's still 2 ;)

Anyway, back on topic...

Also I didn't even realize this starement from the link

The only reason why its faster is they added a superfetch feature to the prefetcher. If you look at the key:

How can anybody even take this tweak seriously when they say something like that? There is a lot of performance work going into Longhorn.

Also not to mention the registry path is not even correct in the link. It should be "PrefetchParameters" not "Prefetcher."

There is no documentation that this tweak even does anything and I bet it does nothing for performance just like every single other registry tweak on the net.
The string is not even in ntoskrnl.exe. It is also from the Theinquirer which is not really a very good source.

h0ly cr4p - this worked for K

try opening a video editing package without the tweak

K's PC took 24 seconds to open AfterEffects

then make the tweak and open the same piece of software

no word of a lie, this PC opened AfterEffects in 5 seconds flat!!!!

JEEBUS!!

Did you reboot first? The file could still be cached on the hdd or memory making it load much faster :fact:

I'm still doubtful, anymore testers along the line of Special K's experience?

Special_K
07-20-2005, 06:59 PM
ok - did restart, and AE took 13seconds to start this time, and took 4 seconds to start it again after closing

thunking about it now, the PC had been on for nearly 24hours before the very first test - mebe that is what made it slower in the first place

lets try removing the tweak and doing this properly eh =]

Special_K
07-20-2005, 07:11 PM
ok - simple test

removed tweak, restarted PC, AE took 25 secs to open and 5 secs to re-open after closing

added tweak to registry, restarted PC

AE took 16 secs to open and 4 secs to re-open after closing

so it saved 9 seconds for the initial opening and 1 second after that

you can draw your own conclusions as to validity of test and results etc

so the question is, is there a tweak that we can actually use that will make it faster?

Magnj
07-20-2005, 09:19 PM
that will make what faster? XP? There's lots of them

Special K is the only one that tried this ?
Seems to work for him, anyone else gonna try or just argue about everything else ?

I'll try it when I get home, I'm at work now and I only have Win2K machines here. And there is no multimedia software on them ;)

This tweak does nothing at all. Windows doesn't even know anything about this value. Running a strings anaylisis of ntoskrnl.exe shows it does not look at this value at all. Running regmon also shows no attempted accesses to this value.

Windows doesn't even look at this value. Period.

which ones ? haha

There are too many to list, but the majority of the tweaks you do read on the net do nothing for performance. Especially registry tweaks. You can ask me about a specific tweak.
