there isnt anything unhackable, so there is no surprise WEP has been hacked. It was hacked in a short time and security professionals have been talking about WEP being easy to hack for a long time. WPA is a lot more safe, but not all routers/wi-fi cards actually support it.

It is prolly easier to actually crack the WEP-key if the Wi-Fi network has a lot of traffic going through it. You just set up a packet-sniffer and wait until a large amount of packet gets sniffed, after that breaking the code is easy as hell and fast. Woala, you have a WEP key now! If the network doesn't have a MAC-address filter, you're free to surf internet or access network's resources. Personally I have nonWEP Wi-Fi at home with just MAC-filtering set up and I'm happy enough as WEP decreases throughout dramatically!

Yea i use both mac address filtering and wpa security. I pay for the nice internet line so why should anyone else be able to use it right?

i just use mac filtering....but the problem is tht my network automaticaly shuts itself down if someone else tries to acess it.....oh well i guess thts the safest way to go

I just use wires, more performance and security. Wireless still seems pointless.

All it takes is around 5000 frames and you can decipher the key used, then all transmitted data is yours!

I just use wires, more performance and security. Wireless still seems pointless.

When you have the ability to sit on the pattio relaxing and having a beer outside with no wires, or connecting to access points if you are a person that travels sure makes wireless worth it. :)

I'm wired in the house now and I just turn on the WAP on the weekends when the notebook is home with me.

And I agree Zinff... nothing like hanging out on the deck with a beverage and your notebook. I sometimes go out ~10pm after the kids have gone to sleep and just geek while I'm being one with nature. :D

My network is wired and i have played around with 802.11b/a and 802.11g some. I don't see myself going wireless at all on my main network ever.
I'm not so sure i like to see so many people relying on the laws to protect thier data... Seems kinda stupid thus far

The laws still can do much of nothing. Think of the thousands of cases the DA's in each county/municipality have to sort through. They won't touch many computer related crimes because of how hard they are to win compared to the time and effort invested. The most recent discussion i had with my network security class was of a recent event that happened in Florida.

Person A owns a home in the, lets say, Miami area. He has a wireless router installed and is completely unsecured. Person B was driving through the neighborhood and saw that his access point was open, so he stopped to get on the net and see what else he could find.

Person A called the police who pulled up and witnessed him in the act of theft of services. The officers saw him using his laptop while parked in front of Person A's home. They arrested him after verifying that he had been illegally accessing the net through Person A's property but he was released in under 3 hours.

While I blame the system for not punishing Person B for theft, i blame Person A just as much for having an open access point, no matter what the excuse (ignorance of circumstances that can affect you should never be an excuse! =p).

I'm just waiting for the first person convicted of stealing net access while wardriving to get sentenced to 25years without parole. At some point in time there has to be an example set, and i pitty the fool that gets nailed first!

I use bandwidth all day long while going from job site to job site. I'd say 80% of private homes with "wireless" are letting people use their bandwidth. Whether intentially or not I can not honestly say. At any rate I thank them whenever I get the chance. ;)

As for my network, when it's on WEP is on and I filter via MAC address. Not the most secure but good enough for the only neighbor I have and the people driving by.

Even just "something" simple is worth it and easy to setup. The average person that uses your open access point to connect to the net won't go through the trouble of sitting there and trying to hack into your system. =p It's sad around here though. I bet i could walk the 3 miles from my house to WalMart and never be out of range of an open access point. Too many people that just have no clue!

just sitting in my bedroom, my wireless card picks up 2 neighboring access points ...both secured :stick:

for those who think wireless is pointless ...most people use it to not bother with re-wiring the whole house. wot wud u do ...spend hours drilling through walls and feeding cables, mounting sockets etc. or install 1 wireless router and be done with it.

Put your cables behind furniture, or use put conduits around your walls for cabling. It's neat and tidy that way :) Wireless is trash, imo.

yes....wireless does suck...al my main rigs are wired but i dont feel like being held down by a cable on my laptop....
