View Full Version : Epox 4PEA+ Memory breakdown
PiLsY

Well, seeing as I discovered this board is VERY picky with what memory it uses I thought id post my results up.
Tested :
1)Twinmos PC3200 w/Twinmos branded winbond BH-5
2)Corsair XMS3202 v1.1 Winbond BH-6
3)Samsung PC2700 CTL
4)Apacer Data Systems PC3200 winbond BH-5
5)Apacer Data Systems PC3200 winbond BH-5
All sticks have been proofed in memtest for 2 hours looping test 5.
Anyway, this is what they did in the IT7/IT7v2.0.
1)IT7 v2.0 : DDR434 2/6/2/2 @ 2.76v
2)IT7 v2.0 : DDR430 2/5/2/2 @ 2.76v
3)IT7 : DDR448 2/5/2/2 @ 3.04v
4)IT7 : DDR480 2/7/3/2/Enhance @ 2.82v
5)IT7 : DDR500 2/7/3/3/Enhance @ 2.9v
And in the 4PEA+....
1)DDR474 2/5/2/2 @ 3.2v
2)DDR470 2/5/2/2 @ 3.2v
3)DDR416 2/5/2/2 @ 3.0v (3.1 and 3.2 made no difference)
4)Wouldnt even post (C1 startup code - memory verified still working though)
5)DDR380 2/7/3/3 @ 3.2v
Conclusions....
This board is picky about ram. The samsung wasnt happy in the 4PEA+ at all. The first stick of winbond wouldnt even post in it. The second stick performed absolutely terribly, but went straight back into the AMD board its been residing in at 207mhz @ 2.85v, so its definitely the board. The Twinmos and Corsair on the otherhand were absolutely storming. Theyre both giving HUGE bandwidth and getting better by the hour (at first the twinmos wasnt able to boot into windows at DDR480 and run 3dmark - now itll do about 3 circuits before it drops to desktop). The second stick of winbond was unstable at DDR200 (!?) using 2/5/2/2 timings and default volts, but was happy at DDR333 using lowest timings and default volts. Very odd.
Heres a full breakdown of what did what at what voltage using 2/5/2/2 timings...

The board does not respond well to slacker timings. Massive performance drops are associated with backing off the TRP and TRCD timings even independantly. This is so pronounced that even with a difference of 50mhz between the 2/5/2/2 and 2/7/3/3 clocks the 2/5/2/2 clock was still over 100mb/s faster in the Sandra unbuffered memory benchmark. The board was not stable with a cas setting of 2.5, causing random errors in memtest at every speed I tried. Tras seems to make no difference as far as hard drive data corruption is concerned either. I noticed no problems at all in use.
The board has an annoying bug (that is hopefully fixable via a bios update though) in that you cannot edit the registry using regedit at all. Doing so causes a spontaneous reboot of the system between 1 second and 1 minute after opening and using regedit. Needless to say this nearly cost me a windows install (thank god for system restore). Still, its a bug I can live with given the performance the board puts out. As the sandra comparison below will show it is much faster clock for clock compared to the IT7, and although I have no direct pictorial comparison between the Max2v2.0 and this board, I can assure you it is WAY faster clock for clock.
My highest sandra benches are attached in the replies below.
Hope you enjoyed the read :).

DDR482 (max usable for 3dmark single run) @ 2/5/2/2 timings.

DDR520 using 2/7/3/3 timings.
Very good buffered, but real world unbuffered performance is comparitively dreadful. Soundly beaten by DDR482 at tight timings in every benchmark.

Excellent info Pilsy. I can confirm that is runs like poop w/ Samsung pc2700 (couldn't get more than 223 out of it) ;)
But surely loves XMS3500:

(that is w/ 4PEA non Plus so looks like both versions OC very well)

No further comment needed, I suppose. :D Just amazing , macci. I'm curious to see if you'll be able to 3dmark at that speed.
Thx for the update, PiLsY. Think I'm gonna buy me one next week or so

I still seem to have hit a wall at 187fsb after testing the winbond stick that wouldnt post. As soon as I reset the cmos I could no longer boot at 187mhz or more. 186mhz is 100% rock stable in windows, 187mhz and I have to reset cmos. This is with mem divider at 3:4 or 1:1. Dunno whats happened.
Still, the 1.6a wont be in here for long - this board is destined for greatness ;).
Thats an absolutely SUPERB score there macci. Looks like I may have to delay my AMD system and get a stick of XMS3500 instead of the Nforce2.
PiLsY.
this looks like the sammys max, 454 with 2.9v on air.
http://www.angelfire.com/pokemon2/newb/images/454mhz.JPG
it refuses to run agressive timings. underbuffered scores are in 1700's :( corsair 3500 should fix this :D
what kinda voltages are you guys using?
PiLsY

3.2 ;).
However - be prepared for a LOT of heat. Am currently heatsinking up my Twinmos :). Time consuming using AS Adhesive though. The tiniest bit on th ram legs and your memory is dead. I really dont want to lose my best stick thx ;).

I did when i sold it you!!! ;)

looks like you got a bad stick of sammy there m8.I tested both the Apacer and twinmos that Pilsy is usings( as I supplied them) with the Twinmos maxing out on the IT7 at 237fsb and the Apacer hitting DDR502 cas2.Both are beaten in my IT7 by my old sammy ctl DDR333.

Very nice read, Pilsy, lots of good info
but it seems that I have different results from yours
The board has an annoying bug (that is hopefully fixable via a bios update though) in that you cannot edit the registry using regedit at all. Doing so causes a spontaneous reboot of the system between 1 second and 1 minute after opening and using regedit.
I don't have that issue, and haven't heard of that from all 4PEA users that I know (except you :p ).
Also my old Samsung CTL did 226MHz in this board at 2.5-6-3-3, 2.83 V. It did the same OC in all boards with over 2.7Vdimm (real).
The Kingston PC3200 Winbond 5ns I'm using does 224 2-7-2-2 at 2.93V in this board (limited by CPU) and did 232 same timings and voltage in a friend's board cos he has a Vapochill PE cooling my CPU.
It seems that we have very diffferent boards ^_^
I love this one :) Performance is excellent !

Very good read about your experiences with different ram Pilsy :)
I am limited by my cpu (2.8@3.56 - POS cos it idles at -8 in windows but just isnt stable at this speed :mad: ) but here is my xms3500 at DDR450 (169fsb) @ 2-6-2-2 @ 3.00vdimm in bios which gives me 3.04 in Windows;
(this is on an everday windows install, nothing specially tweaked or anything. I just ran it now for you guys :D)
http://users.bigpond.net.au/creat/intel/DDR450.jpg
It beats both my old IT7 V1 and the MAX2 Rev2 by a min of 50 points in sandra :)
I just need a better cpu to utilise the board and its memory capabilities more. I might try and find a cheap 1.8A that i can use as a memory testing cpu.....even a 2.26 would be good...:)
ps
I have some reboots when running nature in 3dmark and also sometimes when booting into windows. I also had a reboot when I was doing some settings with MBM5. So I find it reboots sometimes also. But I dont have the regedit problem though.
Anything more about the board and its memory speeds that i find, ll report back about it..:)

Dont think I wont catch you m8 ;).
Seriously, nice work with the board. Its a true performer with the right memory in.
Have now confirmed some anomalies with the dimm slots....
Dimm 1 - maximum performance, very picky about memory but get the right stick of mem in there and your FSB soars.
Dimm 2 - works with every stick, but very poor bandwidth and very poor FSB. Cannot take my twinmos over DDR412 in this slot, but the winbond that wont post in dimm 1 works in here at up to DDR388.
Dimm 3 - works with every stick, better bandwidth than dimm 2 but not as good as dimm 1. Twinmos to DDR438 in here, winbond that wouldnt post @ DDR402. WInbond that would post @ DDR424.
To sum up it seems they have different catagories...
Dimm1 - Performance
Dimm2 - Compatibility
Dimm3 - Best of both worlds.
Also I cannot get dimm2 to register any memory in if another stick is used in another slot. Only 1 and 3 work in pairs.

I tried the mobo w/ some relaxed timings (2.5-7-3-3) but couldn't get it any higher than w/ 2-5-2-2 timings.. guess the chipset just can't stand higher ram speed.
PiLsY
12-24-2002, 01:56 PM
Can you not run cas 2 macci? I found cas 2.5 to be highly unstable. My ram clock on 2.5 is 3mhz less than on cas 2?!
Give it a shot m8.
My board STILL will not post at over 187mhz. It will however run 100% stable at 186mhz. Very odd indeed. This is with ram @ 3:4 and 1:1 btw.
Could you run an unbuffered bench at DDR482 2/5/2/2 timings plz macci? Would be interesting to compare this Twinmos stick with your corsair. This twinmos seems faster than most at any given speed.
Merry xmas all :).
PiLsY.

CAS2 or 2.5 doesn't seem to make any difference w/ this mobo and ram. OC is the same (2.5 might be slightly more stable but hard to tell) and performance is the same too (according to 3dmark, pifast and PCMark mem).
here's a pcmark comparison cas2 vs cas2.5

and here's an unbuffered at 482ddr:

hey PiLsy, which memory were you using @ 520 ddr?
btw, very good info... and accurate :D
my sammy also doesn't go as high on this board as it did
on others..... but, I'm going to get some Corsair PC3500 soon
and see what I can do ;)
the reason I'm asking what memory you were using @ 520 is
that I had some corsair xms pc3200 1.1 with bh-6 on it, and
it ran like a dog.... I got tearing in 3dmark and it had to have
2.7vdimm to run 2.5-6-2-2 timings on this board @ ddr 400....
and it never O/C'ed as high as my sammy....
'course, I think it was just a bad stick, but needless to say
I'm apprehensive about trying another one....
do you think I have a good chance with xms pc3500 and this
board of hitting 520 or thereabouts ?
they happen to like alot of voltage, give it more if u can. gl
macci

Soldered the 'JCLK1' jumper thingy on the mobo and now I have both 3:4 and 4:5 mem dividers workin :)
also did a little comparison at 180 fsb:
http://www.kolumbus.fi/macci/4pea/240vs225mem3dmarkorb.gif
So running mem at 225 (4:5) instead of 240MHz (3:4) makes ~200Marks difference.

Oh and also did the Vcore mod. Its a normal HIPchip mod. HIP chip pin 7 to GND via 50kOhm VR. VR set to ~40kohms gives Vcore of 1.90-1.93V when 1.85V selected from the BIOS. Lower value obviously gives higher voltage.

Yeah I did the JCLK1 thing too m8. Got some odd results though - think I may have a dodgy connection somewhere. Did it with the board still in the case so its not surprising ;).
Anyway, I got...
Auto - 1:1 and 4:5 only
100 - 1:1 only
133 - 1:1 and 3:4 only
Not too much hassle as I can move the connection about to get whatever divider I like.
I did it by using an acetylene bottle torch to heat up a pin red hot, then pushing it through the solder pins on the board. Im using a bent paper clip of all things by pushing it through the holes to create a "jumper".
All hells breaking loose opening presents downstairs at the moment, so 5 minutes peace here is most welcome :).
A very happy xmas one and all.

If I connect the red dots I get 4:5 and 1:1 and if I connect the blue dots or take the jumper off the board I get 3:4 and 1:1.
For some reason the CPUFSB will lock up on me if I try to adjust FSB using 4:5 mem divider. Using Win98 safe mode the CPUFSB will work even w/ 4:5 divider. 3:4 and CPUFSB works all the time.
Merry XMAS all :)

The 4PEA just shut itself down yesterday evening and never booted up again. CPU, RAM, R9700 and PSU are all ok but the mobo is completely dead now.
Well anyways here is how it did at 196FSB 5:4mem (245MHz or 490DDR):
PiFast 3.3 1M (http://www.kolumbus.fi/macci/4pea/196pi.gif)
3DMark (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5453901)
Should have a new 4PEA waiting for me when I'm coming home next time (that would be in two weeks or so). So see ya :)

Pilsy's board did this...pull the batery out for a couple of hours and put it back...it may come back to life.

Yup, mine did that. Do as BigToe says and pull the battery out for a bit. A Simple cmos clear wasnt enough.
Finally broke through that wall I was hitting at 185FSB. And figured out the cause.
Pulled the bios apart and at 100mhz setting the board defaults to the 3:4 divider. This means its trying to boot at 3:4 on the memory until the bios kicks in and makes all the user programmed changes. Shorted the JCLK1 to get 4:5 this morning and booted straight in at 190FSB.

Is it possible to use SoftFSB or SetFSB to get around that instead of your method, Pilsy ?
PiLsY
12-29-2002, 06:10 AM
Yeah most likely.
The thing is I like to have as little as possible software running. Still, 4:5 is a better ratio in my case as DDR470 - 480 seems to be my max stable speed. The 2.26b and 1.6a are both capable of running 185+mhz.
My 2.8 on the other hand is about 180mhz max stable. All depends on what chip you have in.

Ok got the 4PEA #2 :)
Using the settings I used w/ 4PEA #1 (Vcore 1.74V, Vagp 1.5V, Vmem 3.2V - CAS2-5-2-2) I was able to run PiFast benchmark at only 233MHz... the #1mobo ran it at 252MHz. So Quite a difference there I'd say! I tried slower mem timings and different mem slots but nothing seemed to work. (other mem slots wouldn't hit even 230MHz also slower mem timings didnt' give any extra MHz).
Well then I took my multimeter and started to monitor some voltages around the chipset and DIMM slots. It seemed like AGP voltage and chipset voltage would be the same and this gave me an idea to play around w/ the AGP voltage setting in the BIOS.
I set it to 2V and BANG! the mobo would run PiFast at 248MHz now (I think that CPU maxes out at this voltage/temp <- running the CPU cooler at only 5V and CPU temp is above +50C) and sandra mem at 251MHz cas2-5-2-2 idle timer 0 :) Best unbuffered score so far w/ this mobo is 2084/2089. this is without any extra cooling on northbridge (I used an extra cooler there w/ the 4PEA #1). Going to remove the original sink, lap it, apply some thermal paste and put some fan on it and see if I can beat the results I got w/ the #1 mobo :D

Very nice macci.
Just a quick question though :
What's the safe setting for the AGP voltage? I had the memory running at 237Mhz, 2-6-2-2, 3.0V and 1.7V for AGP.
Can 1.8 or 1.9V do any harm? I won't use it permenantly, just for benching.
Don't wanna risk frying something. :D

I used up to 2.10 lastnight to reach enough stability for 3dmark to run at 182fsb. Same as you, ill only use for benching so maxing it doesnt worry me atm :)
Whatever it takes to be stable

Way ahead of ya there ;).

Youll find that it "burns in" nicely macci. I needed 1.8v at first to get high fsb stability, but now 1.6v is enough.

Hehhe so it seems :D
Well gotta start doing some burn in then ;)
Obviously the #1 mobo had superb chipset as it did 3DMark at DDR493MHz (185FSB 3:4) using only 1.5V.

..but then again its ok cos this #2 mobo can do 3DMark at DDR500MHz :D (chipset 1.9V)
tweaked score at 2997MHz (mem @249.75 or DDR499.5MHz..CAS2-5-2-2 idle timer 0):
18688 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5601090)
untweaked score at 3004MHz (mem @250.33 or DDR500.6 2-5-2-2-0):
17955 (http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5601158)
CPU fan running now at 12V instead of 5V and also put a fan on top of the chipset heatsink. Still no modifications done to the mobo :)

macci,
How do you change Idle Timer on 4PEA ? I saw that in the description of this score of yours: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5601090

w/ WPCREDIT :)
Offset 7A=40
also got sandra mem score at 254MHz (DDR508)

thanks macci :) Btw does Idle Timer give you any better performance ? From my previous tests with Abit boards (in which the Idle Timer option is called Enhanced DRAM) it barely gave me any increase.....
That's great CPu and great RAM :) I love this board.....just need a better CPU :p

it gives a little boost in performance..nothing major but there is a small difference ;)

You reckon a vmem mod would get us any higher? Thought I had it sussed but it seems not.
Still cant get it to 3dmark above 181mhz (dragothic test locks up), but itll run super pi, pifast, seti, prime - basically everything you can throw at it all up to 197mhz. Every other 3dmark test runs for hours too - left it looping every test except dragothic high and low overnight and it was still going this morning. Any ideas?

Ive been trying to figure out the Vmem mod today but haven't found a correct way to do it yet :P
higher Vmem would most likely give some extra speed as this xms stuff seems to like high voltage. for instance 3.18V gives quite a bit higher (over 10MHz) MEM speed than 3.0V

hi
i have a problem with my mob, i can´t put more than 153mhz fsb :(
i can anchieve the 156mhz but can´t do pcmark, it crash!
can i do something else?
i have the 2.66, with ocz el3500 5121mg..can´t believe i not do more...:(
i put 1.85volt in cpu, 3.2mem, 1.8agp
agp lock at 66
need help please, it cost me a lot of money...for not working...

Try the mobo with only one stick and put the RAM to slot 1.
Also try playing w/ memory timings.

It might be something else, Pilsy.......
For instance, in my experience with Radeons, they all hate Fast Writes (at high OC) AND 256MB AGP Aperture, which ALWAYS makes the machine crash in Dragothic.
You might not having those exact problems but it could be something like that....

Macci,
Yeah I thought I had it sussed but didnt get any control over what voltage I got. Managed to get 3.3v permanently despite bios settings and resistance adjustment so I though Id better undo it ;). Just shoved a 3.3v line onto the centre pin of the vmem mosfet.
Niko,
The thing is if I set the memory to 1:1 instead of 3:4 it works fine right up to 193mhz when the hangs start again. Funny thing is the memory is clean right up to DDR504 in memtest (looping test 5). Windows stuff is peachy too. Its ONLY the dragothic test that makes it hang - which is flaming infuriating as I have a 20/21k score in the making here. Think ill try a reformat when I can face it.

Exact same thing with me bud. I can bench at 180 fine but 181 is hit and miss and 182 is pretty much not happening.
The test that freezes for me is Car Low or Car High. It will freeze at the exact same spot. It was even freezing at low 9700 OC speeds so I knew it wasnt the card.
Still havnt got it above 185fsb as yet but Im still trying. With the vdimm mod, I get 3.24 when selecting 3.20 in bios so I think Im right with vdimm for now but the mod will be welcomed...I think nico did the vcore mod but I havnt as yet. :)
Its sitting at 36dc atm and is forecast to be 38dc tomorrow so benching is non existent atm :(
[Edit: nico, I have been running with FW enabled so maybe I might turn it off and try again. Maybe thats why Im freezing during at the same exact spot everytime I run Car test. Might try it tonight :)Im using 128meg Apeture also]

Yeah turn off Fast Write :) It's problematic.

Where can I find this place on the mobo, because I can`t find it ?:(

Alright guyz help me here...what do I need to do 4:5 @ 192fsb with my memory.
Ive tried Corsair 3200C2 and I own OCZ 3500EL none have been able to hit this speed relaxed or agressive timings.
then again I didnt know the AGP settings controls the chipset voltage also...so that has always been 1.6v
I figure upping that and playing around with memory voltage see if I can hit that speed.
Both the stix I tried max out at bout 440mhz which I know thy can do more.
If not then its time for some XMS3500.

Wow, forgot this thread still existed, 3 months since last post.
AGP : 1.8V
Memory : 3.1-3.2V
Slap a little heatsink on the NB as it gets freaking hot, should help in reaching higher FSB's.
With some good memory, 250Mhz, 2-5-2-2 should be possible.
Just give it a try.

I am extremely confused by my unbuffered RAM scores.
My ram is only running at 384mhz and its some of the highest unbuffered Ive seen in this thread yet.
Explanation? lol
BAH whats a good place to host images for free =P
I cant find an image host
but both my read and write unbuffered is around 2205mb/sec
