is it more or less guarnteed that a GT will overclock to at least an ultra right out of the box?

6800GT = 350mhz@core with 1000mhz ram
6800Ultra = 400mhz@core with 1100mhz ram

it seems that alot of these GTs are getting around 410~420 on air with stock coolers

hmm so i could just buy a 6800GT and flash it to an ultra?

i would advise against that... , the 6800 gt only has 1 molex connector compared to the 6800 ultra. you may not be able to get enough power, even with bios flash.

my pny 6800 gt did 445/1100 max on stock cooling in aquamark3.

Dont do that cause Ultra bios can damage your card. Gt seams to be dying alot when flashed to ultra. Insted just Vmod your GT bios. I have found that Gainward GT GLH bios score the best. Be careful flashing and have pci card ready in case you get no boot

Just get rivatuner and set the clocks to go to 400/1100 on startup. if you do that, it will run like an ultra anyway. No BIOS flash Needed, and you still preserve the value of your card.

Those ultra memory timings are looser than the GT's, so you will just be tossing some performance away if you flash to the ultra bios.

Just adjust the clock frecuencies at Ultra's Speed, and maybe do a Vmod to the bios card so you can gain a lot more mhz.

Ok, mine at first would only do 1.05ghz mem, but my case temp said it was 53C!! and the HSF thing for my card is freakin hot, so I took side off, trying to decide how to cool it. Now its doing 435mhz Core 1150mhzmem stable. My PSU is INCREDIBLY weak, and my comp just randomly shuts off sometimes, and the whole video card gets pretty hot. So I think it probly has more in it.

Question, is there a way to turn up the fan speed?? It almost seems if mine isnt even working because its so slow I put my hand in front of it gaming and I dont feel a thing. Put napkin in front to see if it lifts it a bit, but barely jiggled the edge :confused:I cant really see it, its got a black filter in front of it from factory, and cant really tell lol. Dont want to take it out

That's BS, show me one GT that has died from flashing to an ultra.
The only thing an ultra bios does (besides the obvious clockspeeds) is raising the vgpu to 1.4V and lowering the timings of the memory.

This may just be a dead thread but there are pleanty of ppl out there without the $$ for a 7800 and the GT's are going for almost half the cost of them now for a card that definatly holds its own against any game.

I personally bought gigabytes PCIe GT and started to fool around with it. With out upping the voltage OC was horrible. But after upping to 1.5 it runs stable 430/1130 on stock cooling. well i did pull off the wrap around heat sink and replaced the crappy paste with AS5 on the GPU and pipe contacts for a 6C drop upder load, which made me happy :), gunna order a NV silencer 5 in another week or so. But im pulling down almost 6K on 05 and a solid 13.5K on 03 and i know im CPU limited in my rig with an A64 3000+.

nothing in overclocking is guarenteed, infact my 6800gt could only do 385/1050 stable with no arties, i didnt really keep it long enough to try vmodding but yeah mine wouldnt have been stable as an ultra...i had a galaxy 6800gt with nv5, i just put it down to the fact i must have got a bad sample

my 6800nu was happy at 430/970, 24/7. With 16 pipes, ofc.

I think with a little effort, most 6800gt can reach 6800u speeds. Just some easier than others.

my friend eVGA 6800GT AGP revision did with stock cooling 425core and 1216 mem..., nice ha?

My 6800GT did 420/1125... But not without artifacts... Now it only does 410/1070 without artifacts and this is watercooled... Maybe because I've got one of the first GT's not yet with PCI-E power connecter... ( One molex )... Still need 2 voltmod but I'm to lazy.

Mine does 445/1200 with Zalman heatsink on it @ 1,5V (PCI-E). To damm it doesn't work anymore since it's large undervolted (Vgpu = 0,8V) when I tried to Vmod it.
Hope we can get it fixed
