View Full Version : Dothan mystery

So tonight I disassemble the Dothan to remove the wire mods because the new BIOS I use has 1.6vcore option. I also install a new HS/F and a P4 IHS on the Dothan core... temps are nice... great to have adj vcore...
And in windows I ws admiring the temps and the OC looked good, around 2800mHz+
But then I ran a sPi 1M and got like 34s at 2800mHz... wtf?
I ran it 2 hours ago and got 25.7s at 2778mHz...
You don't lose 8 seconds from a slight difference in ram timings or whatever. I rebooted several times, wtf?
Also I notice my mouse is "jerky" when I move the mouse it'll go 3 or 4 inches and then "freeze" for a split second... when I go into ctrl+alt+del and look at CPU usage I get an up and down 0-20% even when I'm not doing anything!!
Weird.
Ideas?

hm same fsbs and everything? if so, try upping the agp/pci-locks a notch. that's what
did help me at times use a high fsb.
maybe reflash the bios... if you're running the same settings everything and it does this,
it must be biosrelated. is that the lastest p4c800e-dlx bios (1023.final iirc)?

this is too weird :(
It's the 1023 beta p4c800e-dlx BIOS....
here's my work. Swiftech MCX478 with Coolermaster Hyper6 clips just happens to fit PERFECTLY on the Dothan with the P4 IHS...

Lol i had the same crap. Took me a while to figure that out. It happen when i messed with AGP/PCI timings tool. What happen was that i had my cpu executing something all the time. I found that out when i cliked Alt+del and seen that my cpu is 33-60% busy all the time. No matter what i could not find a proces that did that. Killed all services ,proceses , rebooted few times didnt help. I had PI like in 40 's. I just didnt wait and ghosted new copy of win XP. It fixed that permanetly
Nice air setup by the way, clean work there

Mayby you have been hacked.. lol ;) Repairing the system with winxp disk so i could keep my current profile didnt help. I still had the frkn issue. Only fresh install helped. I did all XP updates and now the sys runs smooth. Best to have a ghost copy of your fresh sys install. Xp gets flacky with time, dont know why but i have noticed this alot.

Most bad xp o/s I get are with sp2... I think I'm going to go back to installing sp1a on all my o/s

charlie, I read somewhere that the IHS didn't fit exactly on the dothan core. So, it does fit perfectly?

Download a program called process explorer. Its free and it will tell you what task manager will not. link (www.sysinternals.com)
I have the same kind of behaviour on my setup when im using a bios that doesnt fare well with irq addressing when using SLI, windows spends 20% of its time trying to resolve the irq conflict.
The easiest way to get rid of it, id say, is to get back to your old bios.

Well here's the deal
When yoy put a P4 IHS on a P-M, there is a small gap between the pcb and the IHS. This is because Intel puts a dab of black RTV silicone sealant on the IHS and THEN applies it to the Core. The installation is the KEY. You have to put a dab of RTV n the IHS and then "clamp" the IHS onto the core. I'm not sure on the exact method. I simply am using the IHS on the core with AS% on the core to IHS and the IHS to Swiftech, kinda like a sandwich. But it's working... even under sPi 32M I can't get the temp OVER 42C

Thanks for the clarification charlie. Honestly, I don't have experience with the RTV Silicone Sealant. I googgled it and it seems a bit off my skills to use it haha (sorry, I really don't know what that compund is).
So I guess, anything that will fit in the 0.5mm (estimated) and act as filler will do nicely right? Hmm...it's gonna be a bit of a challenge for me to find a good replacement filler for RTV =). Am thinking that RTV will harden enough to protect the core, so I will need to find an equivalent. Not too soft to protect the core from getting crushed, and not too hard so as to provide good contact between core and IHS.
Thanks again =)

RTV is silicone, most often seen in automotive applications. Gasket sealant etc....RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing)

I have read alot here that OS get damaged quite often with Dothan tweaking. Whats the deal with that? I hope i wont corrupt my hardrive ;)
Rtv silicone actualy a great idea for a shim. Just make it even with cpu part where you attach block let it dry and you are ready. I'm going to try that when i'l set WC onmy Dothan

just for reference, I used a P4 IHS on my B0 dothan & basically just an AS sandwich (along with a Alpha P4 HS) no problem but I think with my new dothan chip arriving in the mail tomorrow I will take a closer look at the fitting of the IHS...

just AS5 acting as the "PB&J" in my sandwich....a layer underneath the IHS & a layer between the IHS & Alpha HS. I've had my chip sandwiched like that for about 4-5 months and I just removed it about 2-3 weeks ago and put it in my laptop, running w/o problem...core was clearly not damaged in anyway. Of course I'm not using the Asus adapter so that is probably a factor to consider (still using a modded i855GMEm...).

IRQ conflict. this guy sounds right to me. I know this is quite obvious, but did ya rest cmos after the flash? i guess it doesn't matter, as you got it working

Charlie, It Seems That The Cpu Is Too Hot To Work, And It Lower Down.
So Your Mouse Will Be Moving Out Of Control And Pi Is Slow.
I Strongly Recommand To Take Off The Cover And Just Cool The Dothan
By The Original Way, If This Is Not Too Troublesome.

no, it was just IRQ conflicts with the o/s... a quick re-install of winxp did the trick... I now idle at 32C at 1.53v with full load at 44C, temps are GREAAT!!

Woot...i know reinstalling OS (either manuallly or via Ghost) is a pain, but at least, no hardware is damaged or freaking out =)...much faster to resintall software than to RMA hardware ;)

Hay Charlie i did some research on this mystery. I still had the old instalation that was screwed up. I realy didnt want to reinstall all the progams since i had this instal for a while. I used process monitor tool and was able to alocate the proccess that cause the cpu load. It's caled DPC i belive which stand for defered procedure calls. Hovewer i could not kill the damn thinng since it does not have a handle. So i tried to isolate the probelm.
I booted in Diagnostic Strartup mode which only starts a few services. So it came down that ony RPC service was running on my pc. Unfortunatly you cant kill this one at all. There mus be someway to fix this. i.e reinstall RPC Repairing instalation from cd does not help. Take a look at the screenshot. MAyby you can pass this to somone more knowlegeble then me and they could have an idea whats going on or have a fix for this.
