View Full Version : Black gluey sticky stuff to insulate ? (seen on the forum)
Errrrr well I've seen a picture yesterday of some black stuff that was used against condensation on the mobo. The person said you can easily remove this stuff if needed. Anyone knows what this was or knows where the picture is ?

3m 2229 mastic tape (http://products3.3m.com/catalog/us/en001/utilities_telecom/electrical_contractors/node_GSN67LSYSTbe/root_GST1T4S9TCgv/vroot_GSBCDFDZ1Zge/gvel_LJLFLP2Q4Dgl/theme_us_electricalcontractors_3_0/command_AbcPageHandler/output_html)
Nope both wrong, you misunderstood me. It seems like it's a black fluid which you just spill over the board and it gets "hard" like latex then (maybe it IS latex)

Are you sure you cant get that in Germany? I can get it in the UK, maybe this company will ship to Germany:

Hehe... My misery is in the news
Just like some said already - it is Liquid Electrical Tape. The one in particular...
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=33883&stc=1
It peels off quite easly as long as you wait until it fully cures - about 24hrs.
I'm pretty sure you can get it in Germany, too. Maybe not same brand, though... Which does not matter I believe ;)

That is SO :banana::banana::banana::banana:ING COOL.
I have now lost a DFI 875P-T mobo because Asetek sold me a pre early version of the Socket 775 kit. they dident even inform me that I payed 165$ for a product that had errors.

I don't think that's quite the stuff, I bought 12 rolls of it (The place I ordered from had a minimum order amount of like 25$) It's much harder than seal string.
I found identical stuff though. Coax Seal, It's like 3$ for a roll about 1/4th the size of a roll of seal string. There's another product out there too called No Drip Tape, it's almost identical except it's colored white and has little pieces of cork in it to absorb moisture, they are very small and don't interfear with the function. It's about 8$ for a roll at least 5 times bigger than a roll of seal string.

i use servisol plastic seal 60 from Farnell (http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?SKU=3821407&N=401), which i spray on to my mobo.
is the liquid electrical tape safe and strong enough to use, coz i might try some if it is ?

you may want to check into "locktite 394" its a 2 part mix conformal coating designed to keep out condensation, IIRC is has a good dielectric strength and can be brushed on.

This is what I use a lot of the time when trying to cover large areas:
MG Chemicals Silicone Conformal Coating (http://mgchemicals.com/products/422a.html)
http://mgchemicals.com/images/product/422A.GIF
It's good stuff: flexible, made for pcb's, and good down to -65C. For you modders out there, it's UV indicator allows it to "glow" under a black light. However, there is one drawback with this stuff: it's a pain in the ass to remove.

I'm bringing this one back. Has anyone had issues with this extra insulation overheating those little capacitors and what nots all over the motherboard?

does any body use PCB varnish ?

Don't think so bossman. The reason people put insulation in first place is because the parts gets too cold and start condensating.. :) Temperature isn't issue around sockets of cpu on phase change cooling really :P

A little note about liquid electrical tape: while it is good stuff and easy to remove, you must be careful when removing it. I used some for a TEC setup that I used to have, and when I went to remove the liquid tape it took 2 smd resistors with it. Just be careful and go slowly and you will not have any problems.

once this stuff is on, why in the world do you remove it?

I bought a can of laquer from an auto parts store and spray it over anything that's gonna get cold :toast:

That is permanent, isn't it?

yes, very pernament, but if you tape over the labels/stickers before spraying it looks stock.

do you have to neoprene or the lacquer on its own is good?
MeltedDuron

i'd recommend neoprene as well, the laquer is only for elecrtical insulation (stopping coondensation killing your hardware) and posesses no thermal proerties on it's own.
