I saw this at a surplus auction:

Its a 2 stage freezer, 1st stage is R134a/R404 and second is R290/R14 (I think, it was some double digit R I've never seen before mixed with propane). Total charge was on the order of 20 oz, but I forget the breakdown. They only wanted 5 bucks for it, but it had to weigh at least 200 pounds and ran off 220v, so I was fairly skeptical I'd be able to get it off my truck and if I did be able to run it at all. Assuming I can get a hold of it, would it be worth trying to make a chiller out of it? What kind of load do you think something like this could hold?

We've got a few of these around where I work and they hold -90C pretty well, but I'm not sure what the capacity would be like. I'm thinking maybe its not worth the massive trouble to convert one. Thoughts?

It has low capacity but can be converted pretty easy with some know how.

It needs a bigger heat exchanger and replace the cap tube. Once converted it should do xtremely well.

You can try a 2000w step down transformer and see the both stages fire up on 110v

Well I've got 220v at my house, just not my work shop, so I could run a line out to it. But I'm thinking its probably not worth the effort if I'd have to open up the second stage. At that point its probably more fun to just build my own rather then try and reverse engineer someone else's. Plus then I wouldn't have to worry about the 220v issue.

The second stage prolly isnt r14, maybe it was 13? or 23? For $5 why not, problem is disposing of it i guess if it doesnt work out.

i'd buy it in a heart beat for 5$ at least SOMTHING in it is worth more than 5$. lots of the parts are probably salvageable.
