End of Socket 754 A64, It is Official.

shame really, if they pushed the mobile chips more with 1mb they become a really attractive cheaper alternative, blow the P4's out the water never mind the celly :)

That's sad. Even SocketA is still going. AMD should have just went straight for the S939 rather than messing about with the single channel S754.

amd makes too many messes lol don't matter 754 will probably still be a round for a while, consider the amount of mobo's made for it, and how many chips were made....in 3 years a good 754 system will go for 100$ lol and they made single channel 754 to compete with celeron d's 462 just wasn't cuttin' it

Long sockets dont matter. Even 478 that lasted so long... Do you think with your 1.6 Northwood you would use the same motherboard for your new Prescott 3.2 Socket 478? No... you would've gotten something new that supports SATA and dual channel DDR.

Long socket life's benefits are a myth. Sure you could stick the CPU in, but I doubt you would just do that.

New sockets = psychological effect. When you upgrade and yell "WHY CANT YOU HAVE S939 anymore" think about it this way. Imagine your next processor having 939 pins. Would you stick it into your motherboard today? Probably not. You want everything new that comes along with it too...

not entirely true, nf3 for 754, but every one keeps buying the same old dfi one, even with newark lancaster turion claw hammers paris palermo winchester....

The s754 is not dead, AMD will just stop making desktop Athlon64s for it
It will still have Semprons and mobile A64s/Turions.

Thats just the end of the Athlon 64 on 754. 754 will last much longer. AMD just released a new Sempron for it a few months ago, and has more scheduled for this year.

They intended on killng 754 for performance and changing it to budget. Not a surprise. Its also cheaper for them. It gives them additonal manf lines to pump out 939 chips and hopefully, at a lower cost.. More supply :)

This whole thread should probably be deleted. This is recycled old news from over 1 quarter ago, and it only pertains to the desktop Athlon64.

Sempron, Turion, etc., are still going to be 754.

754 is here to stay, the budget and mobile platform will be 754 for a long time to come.

This news was actually brought out by AMD on March 21st... that's a long time ago.
