About 3.4-3.8Ghz intel?

it is difficult to compare them because it is like comparing apples and oranges...

That analogy is pretty close.

A lot depends on your apps and how heavily they rely on HyperThreding.

Check out the GamePC Xeon vs. Opteron (http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=pciews&page=7&cookie%5Ftest=1) comparison for more info. Compare MAX (which relys heavily on H-T) tender times to those for Maya which isn't H-T enabled.

You'll find this effect throughout the Intel vs. AMD speed comparisons.

So there's no definitive answer - nor will there ever be one unless AMD adds H-T to their cpus. And no way to cross-reference any particular model to a counterpart from a different company.
