View Full Version : Anyone else wants IA-64 on the desktop?

Is there anyone other than myself that wants IA-64 processors on the desktop?

Obviously, before this could happen, Intel would have to tweak the IA-64 design to suit desktop apps and price range, but that shouldn't be hard.

I'm just astounded at the potential of this architecture. When Montecito debuts late this year, I think alot of people will be surprised. This chip is going to floor the competition, whether it be Power 5+ or Opteron.

I can only imagine what it would be like to game on something this powerful. It certainly wouldn't bottleneck the GPU like the single core Intel and AMD x86 processors thats for sure.

well, itanium is indeed interesting, it has the best fpu to date.. and very high ipc.
actually, 2007 will be interesting, as xeon and itanium will have unified infrastructure and so on..
but now that microsoft has dropped the win ia-64.. itanium will stay as niche product as it was..
though hardware will be cheaper.. and even now, some 2P itaniums (fanwood core?) cost less than higher-grade pentium4s..
pity that itaniums 32-bit support sux.. wonder if they want to integrate, let's say, a dothan into itanium for better x86-compatibility? :D
btw, i read some time ago that the now canned tejas was gonna be able to execute ia64 code..

I know that there will be a Longhorn version for Itanium, so there is still hope yet!

I also think that placing x86 compatible hardware on the Itanium die is NOT a good idea. I'm glad Intel got rid of that from the original Merced core with McKinley.

All it did was take up die space and increase the power consumption.

Now, I think they prefer to do 32-bit emulation through software rather than hardware, which is actually faster believe it nor not. :)

Mind quoting a source? Last time I heard, Longhorn was still on for IA-64.

It would be a bad move for Msoft to discount Itanium. I feel that Montecito will really help Intel to solidify IA-64 dominance in the HPC and large database/server market.

The only one that can compete with Intel is IBM, but Montecito has some impressive specs, and even more important, it's power usage is very low.
