Just posting this to see if anyone has heard or seen this problem. I removed the IHS from my 4000+ awhile ago. Ran it on DI no problem well it didn't OC well. I decided to reload my HD's and threw on a water block. Well one of the chips around the core arced against my waterblock and took out the chip. I had covered the chips in nail polish to prevent condensation shorting on DI so don't know if that made the differance. Now I have the IHS off my FX and want to throw on the water block but am scared of another short. Just wondering if anyone has seen this or heard of this before or if it was a strange incedent.

i have no IHS on my DTR chip and im using a Mach 2. i covered my chip in dielectric grease (not the core) and all seems well. the core is higher than the little chips, so as long as you tighten the block evenly you should be ok

ive heard of that happening. i HIGHLY suggest you cover it with something that is NON conductive

maybe a little piece of that packaging type plastic with a hole in the middle for the core? you know the sort that fan packets and that sort of thing are made out of. that way it wont chip off like lacquer, but it'll be thin enough not to affect the contact of the waterblock

ahh.. very good idea shinymod... i wish i would have done that with my winchester.. might still be alive..

shinymod sounds like it might work. Was just thinking about possibley using some electrical tape doubled up and laid in place. Maybe tonight I'll give it a go. :)

It was a joke. :slap:

Rofl.
I'd build up some conformal coating or silicone up to core level. Shorts are bad.

then you can add some bread in there with a little pastrami and be set for lunch.

I realize it was a joke.

Yeah, but you could really cook things if the cpu happened to be a presHOT. Don't worry but break out some silicone is what i say.

well.. since it's likely to be at -30 or so... surely it's kept pretty fresh :p:

OK, this joke has gone WAY too far....

lol...

joke ends now. further posts regarding mayonnaise or other homebrew cooking techniques with cpus will be removed. (never thought id say that)

Ok well my first watercooled run w/ the FX. Didn't play with it too much at all just wanted to do some quick testing w/ my X600XT. I didn't ice the water yet. ;) . I went with just the electrical tape. I cut a piece a little longer then the side of the cpu and folded it in 1/2 longways. I made four of these and laid them on the cpu chips b4 dropping the waterblock on. It worked fine. Today maybe I'll try and push the cpu a bit. I think what I'll do in the long run is put some paste on the cpu and sit the water block on. Then I'll remove it and outline the squre with the tape. I didn't try the electrostatic bag idea I may give that a go but since the tape worked I may just stay with it. BTW I hate grease and silicone they are so darn messy to clean up and the mayonaise well just one thing to say to that. :slapass:

well im glad u found something that worked

btw why FX55 with the x600xt when u have a x850? just for fun or is this for the x600 competition

Hrm, if I'm not mistaken, u do NOT want electrostatic plastic on your components while they have voltage running through them. I think it actually conducts electricity, or attracts it or somthing. I don't remember who's post it was on here, but he killed his stuff because he set it on an electrostatic bag while juice was going though it. a simple cut out of plastic (like the plastic sheet provided with thermalright heatsinks to cover the underside of the board to prevent shorts) is fine, I wasn't going to do any of that, but thanks, hehe. I sure as hell will now seeing as how I have a bare core, $330 down the drain is not good. thx for the heads up.

One of my X850's in is in the RMA process which will hopefully work. The second one that ran great now seems dead. I can't get anything but pixels once it boots. :( So the X600 is for the fun of the contest but at the same time the only PCI-e card I have that's working.
