View Full Version : Thinking about making WaterBlocks

This summer I don't have much to do so I am planning on building some WaterBlocks for fun. If I get down production time and make a fair ammount I may sell them at near cost. I was wondering if there is any intrest for home made WB's? Even if there isn't I will still make a few to use in my brothers box and report back the results.

Well depends the designs your looking at. And your skill with drill press/cnc/lathe... A great water block for 6800's and 7800gtx, you could make quite a fortune if you can stay below $60 and cool gpu and ram.

I don't have immediate access to a lathe or CNC but I know some people who own them, they just don't live near me. I have a friend not five minutes from my house whose drill press I'm sure I could use. I plan on buying a pretty nice side ways cutting bit which would make channeling much better.

I'm first off going to be making basic mazes and then move into fin based blocks. From there if I aquire the talent and use of machinery I will try finned impingement and then later on jet impengement technology.

If anyone has any advice to give I am more then open to your knowledge.

And n00b I'll try and do some mock up drawings for the 7800 series. Do they use the same mounting holes as the 6800. If so it would be nice as I think I have some guides here from stock aircooling. I was mainly planning on building cpu blocks at least in the beginning due to the fact that my brother will let me use his set up as a testbed but doesn't want to watercool his gpu because he doesnt want to risk breaking such a spendy piece of equipment.

Thanks,
Twitchy

No clue but good luck. I plan on doing the same thing this summer. :) Search ebay for your own drill press. $1 + 40$ for shipping can happen.

CNC? Come on.. That takes all the fun out of it.. lol
All the blocks I make are completely done on a Hand-oriented milling machine.

I'm not sure if I could use the CNC but I will soon be picking up a drill press and a 2 axis milling block. What did you use inbetween the top and bottom part of your WB. I have some seal-a-gasket that I think I'm gonna use.

I'd try some RTV silicon.

I'd try some RTV silicon.

I have some of that lying around to. Tomorrow I'm pretty sure I'll be purchasing a drill press and a milling block. I'm off to bed now.

thats not really a great idea, as he said he may eventually sell them, and anytime you open the block to clean it you will have to scrap off the silicone and re apply it. O-ring would be better imo.

Were can you get o-rings for all shapes and sizes? I'd rather use an o-ring as well, but I cant find them.

are you thunking of making fullcover (gpu&ram) blocks for gfx cards?

not many peeps thunk they work too well, so you might be flogging a dead horse on that one

you should check out some of the ideas that Pietach has on these forums for homemade blocks =]

Yes they have lots of o rings but I saw no square or rectangular shaped o rings which would seem to work best. Maybe I'm not a good searcher but if they do have them please link it.

Well, for my first few blocks I used three thin layers of sheet gasket, but the next block I'm going to use a gasket kind of like DD uses to seal the TDX and RBX.

I think it would be interesting if you guy's could send Mxxracer some samples of your designs and let him run some comparison test once he gets setup. I for one would like to see how some of these interesting designs perform. :)

I'd Gladly send my Favorite Aluminium one (Yes, My best performer too) once I've got another block to run in my setup.

I was planning on doing that and may send him two different models. I'm thinking of sending him a jetted fin moddle and and a jet impingement design.

Would people be okay with white acetal tops cause I found some at a great price and black is going to cost me much more. Today I won't order my press and it may be longer then anticipated because I will be out of town the first week of july. Once I get back I'll be at full force.

Would you mind posting a picture of the insides and completely assembled block? It would be highly appreciated.

you dont need any special shapes, you just have to make sure they are proper overall length to match the groove they will fit in, and you can bend them in any which direction really, as long as there isnt acute angles you will be fine. :)

Heres my current, and the one I want to do when I can get copper. Its along the lines with a TBX, but using the inerds of Dominator PRO; Of course, 5/8 Tubing will be used for this one. :D

last night I priced everything and I plan on selling blocks for about $25-$30 I will use a design similiar to my second attachment in a previos post. Every block will be made for 3 Barbs but I can cap one side to make it a two Barb. I think it will work because some of Cathar's Cascade blocks were 2 barb and some were 3 barb.

Let me know what you guys think

Was discussing with Maxx on ur/mine design till around 5 am this morning. He thinks it would be truly hard to get a bit small enough but the design is sound.
