hey what do you reckon these cards? both asus:
a 6600 for £90
http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/product.php?productid=18091
or a 128mb 6800 for £160
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_This_Week_Only_25.html
http://www.asus.com/products/vga/v9999gt/overview.htm#
thanks for your opinion guys,

I'd recommend a 6600GT for £120ish - a decent balance between price/performance. I have one and when overclocked, gives me 50 fps in doom3 at 1280x1024 with 2xaa and 2xaf.
Also, i get 10000+ in 3dMark03 :)

ok thanks kitt, i'll see if i can find myself an Asus one... i love asus cards.
but i still wonder about the 128mb 6800 does the reduced ram cripple it?
has anyone had any experience with this card?
thanks in advance

Don't be fooled into thinking that something with more RAM is necessarily better. Usually companies will use slow RAM that they can't move on lower performing "value" cards. This way they are able to unload their inventories and put a flashy 256MB! on the box.

yea and the extra 8 pipes of the 6800gt will help you out performance wise, go with the 6800.

ok cheers guys :) i was worried not just because the ram was only 128 but it was clocked 'slow' at 700mhz but i guess that just gives me more overlclocking to do ;) , thanks for the advice xtreme systems rocks for helping out people with noobish questions like me.
thanks, Ed

Actually, if you look hard enough, you can get a 6800GT for £220ish. But,Id still say that the 6600GT with 128 MB GDDR3 is the sweet spot between price/performance, although in the long run, a 6800GT is worth it if you can find a good price.
Ill get some links.....:)

6800 definetly!!
256-bit memory interface
12 pipes
445/840 = 11800 3dmarks 03
even better when you enable the extra 4 pipes!
6600GT is a BUDGET card

u know u can get 6800 PCI-E cards for pretty cheap.

cheapest i could find a 6800 pci-e on www.overclockers.co.uk (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/6800PCI_Series.html) was £182.07 and the Asus x800xl was £176.19
and i'm sure it has 16 pixel pipelines and the more expensive 6800gt only has 12, also the x800xl is on the 110nm
process (correct me if im wrong) so hopfully will overclock well. see where i'm coming from? i'm intrested in your
opinions though keep 'em coming :)

|EDIT| also the x800xl manages to keep up rather well with the x850xt pe here (http://www.tcmagazine.info/articles.php?action=show&id=144&perpage=1&pagenum=5)

6800GT is 16 pipes and 6 vertex shaders. It's a slower clocked Ultra basically.

x800XL outperforms the 6800GT and is cheaper........though ive heard the 6800 series overclocks better

sorry its not a 6800GT its just a plain old 6800, i just put GT without thinking.
also this asus x800xl seems only to have 12 pipes i thought all x800xl's had 16 pipelines,
anyone? either way it should be here tomorrow :)

£258.44, £264.32 both GT's nowhere near £150 @ overclockers.co.uk (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/6800PCI_Series.html)
£274.01, £272.35, £269.24, £257.52, also nowhere near £150 @ overclock.co.uk (http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/home.php?cat=646)
I'm very intrested where your getting these cheap 6800 gts from?

Asus sometimes goes and does their own thing. It is my understanding though that all X800XL's are 16/6 cards, meaning 16 pixel pipelines and 6 vertex shaders. Good choice on the card, faster than the 6800 and 6600 you had listed.
I didn't know they shipped Dr. P to the UK, I have a hard enough time finding it when I travel outside of TX.

actually, one version of asus' x800xl is a 16-pipe x700. it only has 128-bit memory interface, so it is an x700 pro core, with 16 pipelines. ill try and find the link.

the website has since been amended;
"400MHz Core Clock Speed
980MHz GDDR 3 Memory Speed running on 256-bit interface
16 Pixel Pipelines" ohh that makes me happy :D
