View Full Version : GFX WCing question

ok, so K recently joined the WC brigade, with both CPU and GPU now under blocks, but one thing is bothering K
the gfx RAM chips have no cooling at all now
nVidia control panel now shows that the gfx ambient temp is now hotter than the GPU - ok nice job Maze4, but hot RAM chips can't be all that good for the card can it?
so whats the best thing to do? acquire some ramsinks right?
but what do you use to stick them on? double sided tape? glue? other?
how about making some ghetto sinks from an old cpu heatsink?
K has cut up an old XP heatsink into 0.5" x 0.5" x 1.75" blocks that would fit nicely but will they do the job as well as a commercially available ramsink?
have a look see and tell K what you thunk - thx =]

those sinks should do fine, attach them with a tiny but of as5 in the center and dabs of super glue in each corner.

n00b thinks the ram sinks are a good idea. he also thinks super glue is a bad idea as if the outside dries and the inside is still liquidiy (which it can be) K will be in for a headache. n00b just spent money for the good artic adhesive, but he warns that its very permanent.

i used super glue on this card and on my fx5200, its a less permanent solution that works well.

lol noob
kthx guys - will try superglue idea first =]
The AS5 on the inside with SuperGlue works well. If you want something a lil stronger, you can get ArcticSilver/Alumina Thermal Adhesive. But instead of applying it straight, add in some normal AS5 to the mix. That should prevent it from being as permanent.

I've never had actual problems getting it off really.. I take a soldering iron and touch it to the heatsink/ramsink till it gets warm, like 10 seconds, then just the thing falls off.

FYI, the ram almost always clocks better on watercooled gpu than with stock cooling as the ram is running COOLER.. i know it sounds dumb but half the heat in the ram is from the GPU.... not itself.. the gpu transfers its heat through the pcb to the ram. with the gpu runnning at 30C the pcb doesnt get hot and ur have coooler running ram..
so no need to worry about the ram. pretty much garuntee you those heatsinks wont get u much of anything unless ur running nutty voltage.

well 6 of the 8 RAM chips are now sinked using the AS5 + superglue method
nVidia display panel reports the temps dropped by 20°C - that's 20°C everybody - TWENTY!!!
what to do about the 2 RAM chips that are hidden by the Maze4 barbs?
K hope you are correct Maxxx :crossedfingers:

it should be just fine. but if you plan to voltmod the memory i would use heatsikns.

I use the AS5 + superglue method for my tweakmonster BGA ramsinks on my card....it's worked great for quite some time now........plus isnt the whole point of super glue is to dry after application :p
K - just cut down the Ramsinks to be a little shorter and they'll fit under the barbs.

Course I suppose if you have the 'low profile' version it may be more difficult

404 on the image Nubius, and yes, K bought the lowprofile Maze4 like a dummy =/

I am curious as to what drivers you are using... The 66.93's inverted my ambient and gpu temps...

The temp bug has been fixed in the 7x.xx series ForceWare drivers, try the newer drivers and see what your temps read. The 77.13 BETA drivers are real good, temp readings are more accurate.

71.84 here cos running winXPx64
strangely, Speedfan 4.24 has stopped reading the GPU temp and is now reporting the gfx ambient temp as the GPU temp =/
might have to re-install stuff just to make sure what is what
