I am building a new home and I have ordered a home network to be installed, now I have a few questions.
1. Will the ICS (Internet connection sharing) host computer experience a performance hit either in just computer performance, or internet connection wise?
2. I have two choices for cables : Cat5E and Cat6. I know Cat6 is slightly faster, but is it worth the extra cost (About $5 per connection and I have 6 conections).
thanks!!

cat 5 cable and why are u using a comp with ics? why not a router located somewhere with the modem connected to it and then the wiring going around the house being off that router?

wait so this will work?!?!
cable outlet > modem > router> then plug the router into the wall!?!?!?!
If you mean just using a router, that wont work because the computers are far apart.

Ummm no, he means use a router instead of ICS to share your internet, because ICS sucks! :D I recommend cat 6 cable just for future upgradability to gigabit ethernet.

dude ics sucks! i use a zoom x4 modem/router into an 8 port switch in the living room, with another switch and a hub connected to it, so i get a living room pc, downstairs/kitchen pc, and upstairs pc. i seriously reccomend you buy a router (or modem/router combo if you have a crappy isp provided modem) and use the best cable you can afford, it'll pay for itself when you need 1gb ethernet. if you need any other help, just ask . and for those interested, i use an iMac, an old PowerMac as a web/fileserver, 2 windows boxes, and a linux box, and a really old powerbook for emergencies.

Congrats on the new house. My mom/step-dad have a house setup with a network. Its so nice but my step-dad went a little overboard. I mean who needs a freakin ethernet port in the bathroom?? Oh well its still pimp.

That completely wrong. LOL
Yeah there is a ethernet port and 2 coaxial in the master bathroom, and a phone line in the upstairs bathroom and a ethernet in the guest bathroom. Every single room has 2 coaxial and a ethernet. And there is only 3 phone lines in the entire house. 1 in the upstairs bathroom, 1 in the kitchen, and 1 in the living room.

cat 5 can do gigabit and its cheaper.

Well, it has to be cat 5e, which isn't a whole lot cheaper, so why not go for the gusto and get cat6?

oh yeah that thing. I've heard about that. We never use the home phone anyways. The only reason we have it is for emergancies. We all use our cell phones.

Just a comment.
Didn't it start out the other way...land phone for normal use and cell phones for emergencies?:banana::banana::banana: Tracy would be proud.
Edit:
I didn't intend bananas, I intended that nickname for the Proper name, Richard, however, its sorta funny so I won't change it.

Yeah I think it was. But oh well. Its kind of funny, we always call eachother when we need something. So like if its time to eat I get a call instead of them yelling.

A mobile intercom system...works quite well at Disney World, too.
And my apologies to the thread starter for my hi-jack...just couldn't resist making the comments, but I'm done now. :)
