View Full Version : I am really obsessed with getting a quiet computer
Hope this is the right section, if not please move
Really, i am.
Apart from the fact ive got a zalman 7000-alcu and a vga silencer, i nned quieter. My 2 case fans (was originally 5, removed these as it was creating noise) have both been 7v'ed. Both are exhuast.
Now my problem lies with my power supply, it is an antec smartblue 350w. This ive concluded to be the noisiest part of my computer.
I've tried a few things with it. I have tried removing the 92mm fan (its at the bottom, pushing air into the psu from the cpu). i did this in hope that the hot air from the cpu doesnt get pushed up as much as it did, thus reducing the noise from the 80mm (its temperature controlled). But now its even noisier (the 80mm is now spinning at 2300rpm instead of 1800 as it would normally), and the computer is a bit noisier, and cpu gets warmer.
So, my options are:
1. 7v or 5v the 92mm
2. Get an 80mm that isnt temperature controlled, keeping the 92 out.
3. Same as 2, but with the 92mm in, 7v or 5v.
4. Ditch both, mod the bottom to allow for a 120mm, and put that in.
Ideas would be great.
Cheers

buy quiet 92mm fan and run it at 5 or 7 volts.. while ur at it repace the 80mm fan on the psu too. run it also at 5 or 7 volts.. ur done

Another solution is to buy an Antec Phantom with NO fan at all (or any other). I bet this to be the quietest one available.

I like the 120mm fan mod idea :)

Actually, try to keep PSU fresh air. Cool air. It will run significantly lower RPM which will be quieter. Only problem with the model of antec you have is fans are not the quietest. Rather than modding, I suggest grabbing PSU such as Seasonic, Zalman, Nexus.

Get the Thermaltake fanless PSU, or get that one psu, forgot name, lol, it has one big 120mm fan that runs relaly quiet.

i would change one to intake, sometimes with all exaust it could sometimes cause more noise, ... plus, u get better airflow with one exaust, and one intake...
trance, i actually tried running that, and temps for the cpu went up by 4 degrees, and mobo went up by 3.
so prefereably not. and its louder with a rear intake, as the air can clearly be heard "whooshing" against the side panel.

Would suggest you install a VERY quiet fan in front as a intake.
Increased air flow, and thus lower case temps, will allow the PSU fans to run at lower RPMs.
Would suggest a SX1 Noiseblocker, very quiet 120mm fan if you can fit it. If not enough room then the Noiseblocker 80 or 92mm fans.

These are expensive fans (even allowing for the conversion of Canadian prices/dollars to US), but VERY quiet as well.
Papst also is about as silent as the NB, but not quite as expensive, though they aren't cheap.
Another new fan just out that looks very promising is the Sharkoon Silent Eagle fan, but I've not yet been able to source them.
thanks for the suggestion craig, but if you have a look at my location, shipping may be too much $$$. That is already nearly $40 (i think CA to US is $1 = $1, i may be totally wrong). Convert to Aus $'s, and then we have problems.
we have a stockist here that has fans very similar, but a lot cheaper.
i may go that route. my main point of this thread was not "what fan shoudl i buy" but
"what arrangement would be most effective".

I find that very cheap fans at low voltage are pretty much silent and move a decent ammount of air.
They do get noisy as they get older but the £80p ebuyer fans im using at the moment are so cheap I can bin them all for £8 and buy a new set.
I could even ebay them for more than you pay at ebuyer (as people are dumb) and make a proffit.
(I was running panaflo aluminium fans that are very expensive, but these ebuyer ones are quieter) not that I paid much for the panaflo's either
