I assumed you guys would be some of the best to ask, considering we have so many pros here that know exactly what they are doing.
Im trying to network one of my harddrives to be used as a "community" drive between three computers. I have a router, and have three computers plugged into it. Can I share it using this, or is there some other hardware involved?
I can get the computers to SEE eachother, but I can't seem to get file transfer to work.
So what im asking you guys is: Can you make a tutorial for me that is for someone who has never networked a day in his life?? That would be great! Thank you..

start with google "windows xp home networking"
u will get enough hits to read for months.....
and no.. u do not need other hardware to share ur hdd with the other 2 computers...

go to "my network places" then hit the tools and go to "map network drive. This is helpful if you have 1 hardrive that you want to access on your "server"

So, you can access them in "my network places"? If you have any software firewalls such as zone alarm, disable them as they tend to screw things up. If the computers can see each all you should need to do is right click on what you want to share and select sharing. Don't run the wizard, choose to "just enable file sharing" when it asks.

right click on the folder u wanna share locally and got to prop, so to sharing allow share and in permissions add all of the users u wanna share with permissions as described, that's for fat32.
ntfs got to security tabs and here also add the users with permissions
if u don't have all users on user list in sharing that's easy share everyone (don't do that on fat32 cause that's full sharing and we don't want the internet to del us files :D)
on security tab that's difficulier if u don't have the users ,cause as described above if everyone be allowed all then that's a risk.
best way is add all users with same passwords on all computers.
all above is for 2k and xp remmember .
edit: forgot firewalls - just allow all ip class .

i dont think he means a file sharing scheme.
i think he weants a hard drive to be shared on the network.
ie. and network storage space so if everyone logs off, the harddrive is still avaliable...
right??

I thought that with scsi drives you can set up two machines to share one drive as a sort of cluster, as long as the drive is in an external caddy.
Back to the current problem, go tools, folder options, view then scroll down to the bottom of the losy and untick use simple filesharing, you will now be able to access the $ shares. This is automatically turned off when you join a domain.

Two computers using a single external SCSI drive? Yes, this can be done but you need to buy an enclosure with a SCSI-to-SATA backplace with a repeater. This is assuming you will use SATA on the computers. BTW, each of which will require an external SATA passthrough plate. The external SATA drives that is NAS ready would be much cheaper and easier.
