I've been working on the closed a/c box recently. I will soon pair it with my drewmeister DDX system.
I just finished building it and doing a preliminary run with a small 120mm desk fan blowing over the evap to circulate the air inside. The best temp I got was -29.9C. This was done with a 5200btu a/c that I bought at canadian tire. Total cost of the project was under $200 canadian. I will work on it some more and get you guys some load and OC results.
Pictures are in the zip file linked below.

Nice..I need an A/C also for my rig. It's just blistering hot atm in my room here in T.O....Keep us posted on your results. I might grab one too at Canadian Tire. :D

Looks good sin, Thanks for sharing that.
I have heard of AC boxes but never really saw a design. I take it you need to keep the air dry to prevent the evap from icing up and limiting air flow.
Airtight + silica gel seems to be a common theme around here ;)
Sure beats insulation :)

now this is interesting =]
K have just acquired a de-humidifier that unfortunately has an aluminium (sorry aluminum =p) evaporator so it has been counted out as a possible water-chiller =[
but your idea of making a closed 'cold box' has given K the idea of putting a regular watercooling radiator into a similar box to blow super cold air through the radiator =]
all that would be needed is a re-circulating windtunnel design box with the evap at the top, and the watercooling radiator below and it should recirculate indefinately - right?

The only thing I reall need to worry about it keeping it airtight, which gets a bit hard once you start cutting cable holes and sealing them up all over the place.
