hi all, sorry i havent been around much

ive been trying to decide what to do, i really want an amd64 rig (have been saving for ages) ive got a TDX ready for it (a64 tdx ;)) and im just wondering if anyone knows of any dual opteron boards with PCI-E that are really good?

since im in the UK, could you provide links that are within the UK

im most likely going to use:
Whichever board is found to be the best (or nearest to that)
2x Opteron 240's (cheapest)
4x 512mb pc3200 (cheap, and i want 2gb ;)) (ECC registered)
PCI-E X800XL 256mb VIVO (i want gaming powah!)
2x 200gb Maxtor's (sata's)
Tagan 480w Silent PSU

most of the stuff is rock solid, say the x800xl and the 2x 200gb's, the tagan is most likely to stay after hearing about how good it is and what not

basically im wondering what is the best motherboard to use with this gear?

all help is appreciated

i would also consider dual xeon's, if it is under £1k for the lot

The memory

The CPU's

The graphics card

The psu

The hdd's

the motherboard im thinking of getting

http://www.dabs.com/uk/ProductView?quicklinx=3PNJ

in total this comes to £1056, which is £56 over my budget, ideally i'd like to find some parts that cost less, i havent thouroughly looked over dabs.com, but i dont know many other places to look that have these parts cheaper!

thanks in advance

CPUs buy on eBay (especailly as strong as the GBP is to the USD)....

That motherboard you are looking at is not worth it. Try looking at an Asus K8N-DL.

Asus K8N-DL has pci-e 16x video and pci-e 1x along with 2 pci slots.

Head over to 2cpu Forums (http://forums.2cpu.com/) and read up on the K8N-DL and the Tyan K8WE.... I am waiting on the Iwill DK8EW....

Look here for Opterons on eBay US (http://computers.listings.ebay.com/AMD_Opteron_W0QQfclZ3QQfromZR11QQsacatZ80142QQsocm dZListingItemList)

There are lots of EU users on 2cpu forums that will help you source goodies... Including the Dutch Iwill distributor

I'd worry about buying off of ebay when it comes to CPUs - makes me think they might be someone's cast offs that didn't OC too well, after all, that's what we all do, isn't it?!!

Don't you look at who is selling the item???
Did you look at the thread title? These are opterons, not athlons we are talking about here!!

I dont recommend buying a cpu from some Joe who has only a 10 positive feedback, I bought my last cpus from cpusolutions rated over 2900 postive feedback. Most all the Opterons are pulls from working servers and then tested, buying a pair of these is no different than buying new from a store (aside from the thermal goo not cleaned off everything) although you get only about 7day warranty, at least you know for sure that it worked when they sent it to yoiu.

I was actually looking @ the K8N-DL as it looks to be a very good board, is dual opteron stuff cheaper in the US? if so would anyone be willing to ship it to me?

Spec's:

Asus K8N-DL (xtreme-systems recommended it to meh)
2x Opteron 252's (200mhz more for £20 (over 250's))
4x 512mb pc3200 ecc registered stick's (due to independant dual channel per CPU + i want 2gb)
X800XL 256mb (pretty solid on that one)
Tagan 480w (Hope it will power it all!!!)
2x Maxtor Diamondline 10's

The Motherboard and processor will be ordered from scan as they seem to be the cheapest

The memory, GFX, PSU and HDD's will be ordered from Dabs

anyone got any e-mazing suggestions as to something i should change?

im most likely going to order this around the 20th of june (my bday) as then ill have some mo' cash along with this i need to order another TDX :O

in total it comes to £1015.68 which is £282 more than my Single CPU amd64 rig :S so its not to bad, comparing ill get a bit more multitasking goodness

the advantage of the K8N-DL seems to be the fact its ATX!

im just wondering, will my TDX's fit? (the holes look damn close together!)

Nice setup, but I would still go with used cpus from eBay and use the money saved for a better PSU.
