View Full Version : Worth cooling TCCD RAM?

Hey guys,

Just wondering how much improvement, if any, you've had with adding active cooling to your TCCD-based RAM?

I run mine @ 3v and it does get pretty toasty. I just want to know if it's worth my time and money watercooling it.

What gains have you had from active cooling (air or water)?

I'm surprised you don't get memory errors without some sort of air cooling for the ram at 3v. The short answere is yes you should cool your ram.

A fan will just do the trick :D

When your ram starts needing 3.1v to run. Then its the dfi bug getting ya. I have had 2 sets of tccd both needed 3.1v to run correctly and I actively cooled them from day one. So yes cool them or it will end them.

They´ll last more time for sure :P

If you're running 3V then it's a good idea. I picked up a toy building set and this is what the outcome is :toast:

OK, a few comments:

1) I'm not interested in qualitative feedback. I want quantitative - ie. "I stuck a fan / heatsink / waterblock on my RAM and got 20 Mhz higher clock".

2) I refuse to use fans (on an everyday basis). If they get cooling, it's going to be passive heatsinks or water. I don't mind using fans for benching, but I'm after a 24/7 solution.

3) I'm not interested in prolonging the life of any component for the sake of it. If it dies, it's just an excuse to get something better. If it makes a difference, even if it's 1%, I'll cool it. Otherwise, it can burn for all I care :cord: :D

Thanks for the feedback so far, but I want some proof or some experiences / comparisons.

Sorry if my reply seemed blunt!

I'll buy a couple of cheap heatsinks and use a 120mm fan to try it out.

If I get 5 Mhz more, then I'll say it's worth it.

I'll let you know.

Putting a fan over my LA's gave me Prime stability increase of 10 MHz at 2.5-3-3. (From 275 to 285) It also gave me the same 10MHz with 2.5-4-3. (From 300 to 310)

Sorry if my reply seemed blunt!

I'd apologised already.

Sorry again.

:slapass:

And, to recap my post:

:D

Thanks for the feedback so far, but I want some proof or some experiences / comparisons.

That was all I intended.

Putting a fan over my LA's gave me Prime stability increase of 10 MHz at 2.5-3-3. (From 275 to 285) It also gave me the same 10MHz with 2.5-4-3. (From 300 to 310)

Thanks mikead_99.

Sorry again guys. I guess I had too much caffeine @ work :stick:

As a gift, I offer you the temperature of my un-cooled G.Skill sticks @ 3v and 200 Mhz during Memtest86:

Proof indeed that I am evil.

LOL

No harm done Jimbo ;)

wow 66c !

I think I'll stick one of my extra temp probes on mine just to see for myself.

:slobber:

OK, so it was rather a success!

I bought two sets of these:

http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/memory/hddr01.htm

and just used the large sinks rather than the crappy heatspreaders.

Before:

227 Mhz @ 2-2-2-6 1T 3v

235 Mhz @ 2-3-3-7 1T 3v

After:

239 Mhz @ 2-2-2-6 1T 3v

266 Mhz @ 2-3-3-7 1T 3v
