Can anyone tell me the exact source (thermistor/diode/etc) of the "Ambient temperature" which is found just below "GPU core temperature" on the nVidia Geforce 6800 Temperature Settings control panel?

Could there be an actual thermistor on the 6800 GT PCB surface? Or does the Forceware driver monitor a thermistor from the motherboard? The latter seems unlikely because I haven't been able to find a matching "ambeint" temp with the exception of the "Ambient temp" displayed by programs such as RivaTuner's Hardware Monitor option.

This would leave me to theorize there's an actual thermistor on every 6800 PCB which seems odd from a cost perspective and conisdering they chose to eschew a GDDR/3 memory monitoring device (which would be much more useful). Anyway does anyone know?

I've included a screenie to show what I mean about not finding any other matching temp. You'll among Hardware Sensors Monitor, Smart Guardian, Riva-Tuner and the 6800GT Control Panel only the last two show an ambient temp which matches. You'l also notice the "Ambient" temps found on RivaTuner and nVidia control panel both read 45C. It's definately not 45C inside my case because I have a thermistor from my TTGI 610 in there and the case is currently open anyway. Ambient temp now is about 18C. The card is currently being water cooled via Danger Den NV-68 which may account for the high "Ambient" i.e no fan on pcb?

I would assume its some kinda socket or something probe, hence why its like 10-15 cooer then the actually gpu reading. Its just like a cpu socket and diode 10c diff or so
