I'm a little curious to know if there is any point in buying a X800XTPE over X800XT this day. I can imagine they bin the chips, but how much?
I mean, there has passed quite some time since they started making these chips, so one could assume they've got the process good enough to put out high speed cores even for the XT cards.
When cruising the ORB, after the real high numbers, it seems like the PE version normally clocks to ~670 on the core, while the same number for XT is ~630. (But that could be that overclocking people with PE cards put more effort into it)
But I can't make up my mind if it is worth spending an extra $50.
The card will be seriously cooled (Phase or DI) and voltmodded, if that makes any difference to your suggestions

it is not really worth it to buy any highend graphic card anymore because the new cards will come out pretty soon

But i suppose R520 and G70 won't come in AGP version, which I'm going to buy.

if im not mistaken r520 will be the last ATI big release card to come out in agp, of course it will also be out for PCI-e.

rialto makes it so any ATI pci-e card can make it to AGP, AFAIK.
IF there is a demand for AGP product, they will come.
I would chose a non-PE, as most of those can be clocked quite high.. At the downside you might get a X800XT with 2,0ns mem, as opposed to the PE which all are with 1,6ns.. As for the next gen, yes it's comming in the near future, but then they will be made in better editions, as the x800 til x850, so you could continue to upgrade.. And the speed at which new generations are being made seems to have increased, so that you might see the next generation in the start of 2006.. Just my oppinion..

What's $50 anyway when spending that. And considering the effort *you* are gonna put down into cooling, you'd better not risk a "bad" chip. Go XT PE, imho.
Regarding R520 "Fudo", the inq has stated for quite some time that there WILL be an AGP version of the card, prolly using their rialto chip (now that it's finished iirc). Wait for Fudo, if you believe Fuad, that is.
Inq: ATI R520 Fudo goes AGP (http://www.theinq.com/?article=21699)

Think of getting 9700 then X800 - doing this you have ALWAYS been able to play all games at best settings (if the rest of your system's up for it) - and just think of it when OC'd. Then think of waiting a year for both purchases - 9800 then X850, having to wait a year for the tech to become outdated for very small gains, giving up a year of high-quality graphics just for some little little increase in fps, and then, just around the corner, lies the next-gen-train, which you're late to AS WELL!!
which way is better is quite obvious.

My recommendation would be to wait for the r520.
Since there has been production problems since the release of the x800/x850 series, it may take a wile for availability and good price.
Get the r520, if not get the x800xt All-In-Wonder if you like media a lot.
I have it and I recommend it.
If you like peformance, then get a x800xt, x800xt PE, x850xt, or x850xt PE.
Get the cheapest of these 4
I would recommend the x850xt. They are cheaper and a bit better than the x800's
Here is a link for a Sappire x850xt AGP for only $400 !!!

Thank you very much for your answers. I think I really would like to get 1.6ns mem, so I guess X800XT is out of the question. What about X850XT? Always 1.6ns?
Secondly, I've read that OVP is a little bit trickier on the X850 cards, true?
